Personal life
Simmons was a two-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll in college. Dylan Bradley, Simmons' brother, played football at Southern Miss and then spent time with the Minnesota Vikings, while his uncle, Jason Hatcher, spent ten seasons with the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins. Simmons, who is out of football, loves fishing and spending time outside. Jeffery Jr. has a son, as well as two sisters, Brooke and Ashley.
College career
Simmons was considered a five-star prospect after his stellar career at Noxubee County High School in Mississippi, and he joined Mississippi State over Alabama and Ole Miss.
Simmons appeared in 12 games, three of which were as a true freshman in 2016. In 2017, he had a breakout season and was a unanimous selection to the 2017 All-SEC football team. Simmons was drafted in the 2019 NFL Draft on December 20, 2018. Simmons tore his ACL when preparing for the draft on February 12, 2019.
Professional career
Simmons was drafted by the Tennessee Titans with the 19th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Simmons agreed to a four-year rookie deal with a team option for a fifth year with a $7.23 million signing bonus on May 22, 2019. While recovering from his torn ACL injury, he was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list to start the 2019 season.
Simmons was activated by the Titans on October 19, 2019 from the non-football injury list. He made his NFL debut against the Los Angeles Chargers the next day. Simmons won by 23-20 after four tackles and dismissed Philip Rivers once. Simmons appeared in all seven games from week 8 to 15, with 32 tackles, two sacks, and one pass deflection.
In the playoffs, the Titans won upsets over the New England Patriots and the Baltimore Ravens before losing their AFC Championship game against the Kansas City Chiefs, the eventual Super Bowl champions. Simmons recovered a fumble called on Lamar Jackson by teammate Jurrell Casey during the 28–12 road victory.
Simmons was fired for the first time of the season during a 31–30 road victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3. Simmons was put on the reserve/COVID-19 list by the team on October 3rd. He was activated on October 15 and was unveiled on October 15. Simmons fumbled running back David Montgomery, which was recovered and returned by teammate Desmond King for a 63 yard touchdown during Week 9 against the Chicago Bears. Simmons was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in Week 9.
On April 27, 2022, the Titans obtained the fifth-year option on Simmons' contract.
