Roquan Smith Career

College career

Smith played college football under head coaches Mark Richt and Kirby Smart while at the University of Georgia. Smith played in 12 games and had 20 tackles as a true freshman at Georgia in 2015. He played in ten of 13 games as a sophomore in 2016, earning 95 tackles.

Smith was named MVP of the SEC Championship Game and SEC Defensive Player of the Year by the Associated Press in 2017, as well as SEC Defensive Player of the Year. He also became the first Georgia Bulldog to win the Butkus Award. Smith forgoes his last year of eligibility and joined the 2018 NFL Draft.

Professional career

Smith was drafted by the Chicago Bears with the eighth overall pick in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

His contract signing was considerably postponed due to language in his rookie contract that states that if he was suspended due to the NFL's new rule out prohibiting contact leading with the helmet. CAA argued for a wording that would guarantee Smith's future, while the Bears preferred for decisions to be determined by the league, a situation that was exacerbated by skepticism surrounding the constitution and the frequency of attacking in Smith's role. The Bears signed Smith to a fully guaranteed four-year, $18.47 million deal, which also included a signing bonus of $11.51 million. He was the last first-round pick in his draft class to join his team.

Smith was fired on the Packers' quarterback DeShone Kizer in his first NFL appearance against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night Football. Smith made 13 tackles against the Miami Dolphins in Week 6. In Week 9 against the Buffalo Bills, Smith made 13 tackles as the Bears defeated the Bears 41-9. In Week 10 against the Detroit Lions, he made 10 tackles and fired quarterback Matthew Stafford, while the Bears defeated 34-22, while also leading the team in tackles in both of these weeks. In Week 12, he made 11 tackles and suspended quarterback Stafford, defeating the Detroit Lions by 23-16. Smith made six tackles and recorded his first career interception off Jared Goff's return to the ball 22 yards to the four-yard line as the Bears defeated the Los Angeles Rams in Week 14 against the Los Angeles Rams. Smith made ten tackles against the Green Bay Packers in Week 15, which was a 24–17 victory. Smith won by 14–9 over Week 16 against the San Francisco 49ers, making nine tackles and dismissing Nick Mullens. As the Bears defeated the Vikings 24-ten, Smith had six tackles during a Week 17 game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Smith led the team with seven tackles and made an interception against Nick Foles on January 6, 2019, following the Bears' 16-15 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in a Wild Card playoff game.

Smith had 121 tackles, five sacks, five passes defense, and one interception. In 2018, Pro Football Focus ranked him as the 39th highest grade among all qualifying linebackers, and he was selected as a Pro Bowl alternate.

In Week 2 against the Denver Broncos, Smith led the Bears to a victory of 16–14. Smith also intercepted a pass thrown by Jared Goff in Week 11 against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday Night Football. Smith won by 20 points against the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day and dismissed rookie quarterback David Blough twice. Smith was put on injured reserve on December 9, 2019 after suffering a torn pectoral in Week 14.

Smith made a team-high 11 tackles and sacked Ryan Tannehill once against the Tennessee Titans in Week 9, and he lost by 24–17. Smith had a team-high 14 tackles and sacked Kirk Cousins twice during Week 10 against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football. Smith led the team to victory in Week 14 against the Houston Texans. He had 12 tackles and two sacks.

Smith intercepted Mike Glennon twice by the Bears in Week 16, making him the first Bears player to have multiple interceptions in a game since Ha Harrington-Dix in 2019. Smith was also the team's first linebacker to win the honor after Lance Briggs in 2008. For the second time in Smith's career, the Bears made it to the playoffs. However, he was inactive in their appearance, a 21–9 loss to the New Orleans Saints, after suffering an elbow injury in the season's last game.

He was elected by NFL players and executives for the first time this season, as well as the second team All-Pro team of Sporting News.

The Bears used the fifth-year option on Smith's deal, which guarantees a salary of $9.7 million for the 2022 season. In a 20-17 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on September 19, Smith intercepted a pass by Joe Burrow and turned it 53 yards for a touchdown. Smith was fired along with 12 total tackles in a 29-27 Monday Night Football loss that sent the Bears to a 3–6 record on the season. In a 16–14 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, Smith had a career-high total of 17 tackles, two of whom were tackles for losses. Since Brian Urlacher had 19 tackles in a single game before he played 19 in 2006. Smith finished the season with one interception and 163 total tackles, the fifth-most in the NFL. He was recruited to the NFL.com's All-Pro team and the Associated Press' second team All-Pro.

Smith stated in early August 2022 that he had tried to reach an agreement extension during the offseason but the Bears have released him, citing the fact that the "new front office system doesn't care about me here." Smith did report to the Bears' training camp but he refused to practice. Smith halted his participation in practices on August 20, and said he would no longer be negotiating with the Bears' front office for the remainder of the 2022 season. During a 23-20 victory over the Houston Texans on September 25, Smith had 16 total tackles, two tackles for loss, and an interception.
