Jeff Soto (born June 3, 1975) is an American contemporary artist.
According to pop Surrealism and Street Art, his distinct color palette, subject matter, and method were all supposed to bridge the gap between Pop Surrealism and Street Art.
Early life
Soto was born in Fullerton, California, and was the oldest of four brothers. Jeffrey, his father, served as an offset printer and was an outdoor enthusiast and taxidermist. Patricia, his mother, was a homemaker. Soto grew up in a middle-class household where creativity was encouraged. Due to his parents' many outdoor pursuits, gardening, fishing, falconry, and camping, he developed an interest in animals and plants. Soto showed an interest in drawing, painting, and storytelling from an early age. Soto began to experiment with a variety of art styles, including painting, photography, ceramics, and filmography as a high school student. He was a California Arts Scholar in 1992 and 1993 and attended the California State Summer School for the Arts held at CalArts in Valencia. In 1993, he graduated from Norte Vista High School.
Education
Soto served at Riverside City College from 1993 to 1999, earning an associate degree in Arts. Soto experimented with art while at RCC, including sculptures, public artworks (graffiti and stenciling), abstract painting, and computer design.
Soto studied illustration and minored in Fine Art at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, where he majored in Illustration and minored in Fine Art. Soto, who was disillusioned and dissatisfied with the state of graffiti art in the late 1990s, suffered through what ended up being a decade long hiatus. He concentrated on both exhibiting his work in local galleries and expanding his illustration career. Soto was inspired by many of his Art Center instructors who were exhibiting the same work in galleries over the years. During his first year in college, Soto had his first solo exhibition. Just days after the September 11th terrorist attacks, Potato Stamp Dreams opened in Los Angeles at New Image Art Gallery. Soto began drawing in illustration as a student in 2002, with illustrations appearing in American Illustration and Communication Arts. In April 2002, Soto received his Distinction from Art Center College of Design.
Personal life
Soto and his partner Jennifer and their two children live and work in Riverside, California. He began teaching studio art classes at Riverside City College in 2016.
