Jeff Koinange Career

Early life and career

Born in Kenya, Koinange was born in Kenya and spent time with Kenya's first independent television station, KTN. He attended Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, New York, from 1987 to 1989, earning an associate degree. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in broadcast journalism from New York University.

Koinange worked for Reuters Television from 1995 to 2001, covering Africa and serving as their chief producer from 1999 to 2001, prior to joining CNN. He served as a producer at NBC News in 1994 and earlier for ABC News, from 1991 to 1992. In 1998, Shaila Koinange married his second wife, Shaila Koinange.

The crisis in Darfur, liberia and Sierra Leone's civil wars, and the famine in Niger were among the more notable stories featured on CNN in Africa, for which he received an Emmy award.

In early 2007, Nigeria's government reprimanded Koinange for his coverage of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND). In his book, Koinange led masked MEND guerillas to a camp where they were holding a number of Filipino hostages. The Nigerian government denied that the investigation was "staged," a charge CNN denied.

He has also covered foreign affairs, including extensive coverage of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in the United States and the Iraq War.

CNN announced on May 29, 2007 that Koinange was no longer employed by the network.

In December 2007, seven months after leaving CNN, Koinange was hired as a news anchor by a new Kenyan television station, K24, which began testing transmissions in Nairobi. He was the host of the Capital Talk Show. He now hosts 'Jeff Koinange Live,' a talk show on Citizen TV Kenya, part of Royal Media Services and a prime news anchor for the same station.

Koinange's autobiography, Through My African Eyes, was published in 2014 by Footprints Press Kenya, and he explains his education and work as one of Africa's most respected journalists. Despite being a public figure, he has kept a lot of his personal life private, and the book serves as a window into his personal life.

In various ways, Koinange has been active in giving back to the community. He began a campaign in 2017 to expand and stock a library in Kibera's slums, where students from the neighborhood will have access to reading materials. He has also appeared at several prominent speaking engagements, including at the Journalism In Africa forum organized by a non-profit group called Fatuma's Voice in 2016.
