Jay Enrique Rodriguez (born 29 July 1989) is an English professional footballer who plays for Burnley in the Premier League. He began his career with Burnley, for whom he scored 41 goals in 128 appearances in all competitions from his rookie in 2007.
He joined Southampton for around £7 million in 2012, where his form earned him his first England cap, but he was forced to miss more than a year due to injury.
Early life
Rodriguez, a descendant of Spanish descent through his father and paternal grandparents, was born in Burnley, Lancashire. Kiko's father was born in Burnley, Spain, and he grew up in Spain and England. Kiko was a non-league footballer.
Rodriguez is the older of two sons. In the town, he attended Heasandford Primary School and Barden High School.
Club career
Rodriguez completed his two-year apprenticeship after progressing through the youth ranks at Burnley and being promoted to the senior squad at the end of the 2006–07 season. He was the only one to be signed by Burnley boss Steve Cotterill from the seven youth players available at the time.
He made his first team debut for Burnley in the Championship on December 29, 2007, when he came on as a late replacement for Stephen Jordan in the 1–0 loss at Turf Moor to Bristol City. Since signing in January 2008, Rodriguez spent the 2007-08 season on loan at Stirling Albion, Scotland's First Division club. While not reporting for Stirling on match days, he continued to train with the Clarets. He made his Albion debut against Celtic a day earlier in a 3–0 loss at Celtic Park in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup at Celtic Park. David McKenna's replacement came on as a second-half replacement. Rodriguez scored five goals in four games in March 2014 to reach 15 Premier League goals for the season. After injuring his knee, he was stretchered off during a match against Manchester City on 5 April. Rodriguez had fractured an anterior cruciate ligament and would be out for eleven months, effectively excluding him from the 2014 FIFA World Cup. As a result of this injury, he did not appear in a single match during the 2014-2015 season.
Rodriguez had signed a new four-year contract with Southampton on May 12, 2015.
