Mathew Jay Roach (born June 14, 1957) is an American film director, producer, and screenwriter, best known for directing the Austin Powers films and Meet the Parents.
He also directed the comedy film Dinner for Schmucks (2010), the HBO political dramas Recount (2008), Game Change (2012) and All the Way (2016), and the political comedy The Campaign (2012).
His twelfth film, the biographical drama Trumbo, was released on November 6, 2015.
He produced these films under his Everyman Pictures banner.
Early life and education
Roach was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where his father was a military worker. He graduated from Eldorado High School in 1975. He received a BA in economics from Stanford University in 1980 and later earned an M.F.A. in film production from the University of Southern California in 1986.
Personal life
Roach is married to musician and actress Susanna Hoffs of The Bangles, with whom he has two sons. Roach was raised a Southern Baptist, and converted to Judaism before marrying Hoffs.
Career
Roach made his directorial debut with the 1990 comedy film Zoo Radio. He received further accolades for his 1997 spy comedy Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997), starring Mike Myers as the principal character. In Goldmember (2002), he returned to direct Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999) and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999).
In October 1999, Roach also produced Mystery, Alaska, a sports comedy-drama film that was released in October 1999. He continued to produce critically and commercially successful comedies, including Meet the Parents (2004) and its sequel Meet the Fockers (2004), Dinner for Schmucks (2005), and The Campaign (2012). Roach's career branched out into other genres, including the biographical period drama Trumbo (2015) and the biographical drama Bombshell (2019), which received multiple Academy Award nominations.
Roach received critical esteem for directing several HBO political drama films. In comparison to the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing a Limited Series, Movie, or Outstanding Television Film, he directed Recount (2008), which earned him two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Film, or Dramatic Special and Outstanding Television Film. He later directed Game Change, the 2008 McCain/Palin campaign, which premiered in March 2012 as one of the most watched films in HBO history.
