Javi Martínez Life

Javier "Javi" Martez Aginaga (born 2 September 1988) is a Spanish footballer who plays for Bayern Munich as a defensive midfielder or a central defender. He joined Athletic Bilbao in 2006, just before his 18th birthday, establishing himself as a starter and progressing to appear in 251 official games over the course of six La Liga seasons, scoring 26 goals.

He signed with Bayern Munich for €40 million in 2012 and went on to win seven consecutive Bundesliga titles as well as the 2013 Champions League. Martnez, a Spain international since 2010, was a member of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2012 squads, as well as the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Personal life

Club career

Martnez was born in Estella, Navarre, and grew up in the nearby village of Ayegui; he was a promising basketball player in his youth. Despite him never having played a single minute for the reserve team in 32 appearances, Athletic Bilbao signed him as a raw 17-year-old in the summer of 2006, from fellow La Liga club CA Osasuna; he had scored three goals in 32 appearances.

Martnez quickly made his debut in his debut season, with his best showing coming back against Deportivo de La Corua in a 2–0 away victory on December 16, 2006, where he finished with 35 games and three goals. He was ever-present over the past two years, leading Athletic to the Copa del Rey final in 2009.

Martnez was the midfield engine in 2009–10, with 46 official matches, nine goals, and a career-best six times in the league season, when the side barely escaped on another qualifier for the UEFA Europa League. He began to be used regularly as a central defender in 2011–12, earning 50 starts in the demanding role and three red cards during the second season, which culminated in the team's second domestic cup final and also the decisive match in the Europa League.

Martnez agreed to a five-year deal with Bayern Munich on August 29, 2012, following Bayern Munich's payment of the buyout clause in his deal. He also set the highest transfer rate in the Bundesliga's 50-year history. Martnez made his official debut on September 2nd, his 24th birthday, on a 77th minute substitution for Bastian Schweinsteiger in a 6-1 home victory over VfB Stuttgart. On Saturday, he scored his first goal for his club against Hannover 96, netting the opener in an eventual 5–0 home victory through a bicycle kick.

Martnez started the 2013–14 campaign on the reserves bench, under new manager Pep Guardiola. As the Bavarians advanced to the trophy in Prague after a penalty shootout, he took the field early in the second half of the match against Chelsea in that year's UEFA Super Cup and scored the 2–2 equalizer in the last minute of extra time. Martnez made one goal in 34 appearances on the season.

In a 2–0 league loss to Bayer 04 Leverkusen, he returned to action on May 2nd, starting in central defense. Martnez made his first appearance of 2015–16 on September 19, 2015, when the team's 3–0 win over SV Darmstadt 98 made its first appearance of the year since being listed in 24 minutes and being identified. In a 3–0 loss of 1.FSV Mainz 05, the following matchday, he got off to a halt for his first match of the season.

International career

Martnez debuted in 1939 as a member of Spain's under-21 team, representing the country at the 2009 European Championships in Sweden in a group stage crash. By boss Vicente del Bosque, he was ranked number 23 on the senior side of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa on May 20th. In Innsbruck, Austria, on the 29th minute, he made his full debut, replacing FC Barcelona's Xavi in the 74th minute of a 3–2 friendly victory over Saudi Arabia; on June 3, he began with South Korea (1–0 victory in the same venue) for the first time before David Silva took his place.

Marten appeared only in the final stages, replacing injured Xabi Alonso for the final 20 minutes of Spain's group stage 2–1 victory over Chile on June 25th. He returned to the under-21 grid in Denmark for the 2011 European Championships, captaining the country to its third title in the event.

Martnez also appeared in one game at UEFA Euro 2012 for the eventual champions, this time against the Republic of Ireland in the group stage (4–0 win). He was described as "a complete player" by del Bosque, with the manager comparing him to Patrick Vieira; in addition, he was part of the 2012 Summer Olympics team, which resulted in group phase elimination.
