Early life and acting
Hervey was born in Los Angeles, the son of Marsha, a talent agent, and Alan Hervey, a retail sales manager. Hervey appeared in films including Back to the Future, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Meatballs Part II, Their First Assignment, and Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment, and he appeared as Charlie in the final season of Diff'rent Strokes. As the older brother of Fred Savage's play The Wonder Years, he had his big break. He came in seventh place in VH1's 100 Greatest Kid Stars for the role.
Hervey's work on The Wonder Years culminated in a later appearance on the animated series Justice League Unlimited. In a role reversal from The Wonder Years, he appeared alongside Savage in the episode "Hawk and Dove" in which Hervey played the younger, more passive brother Don Hall/Dove, opposite Savage's role of the older, more robust brother. The initial plan had been to cast Hervey as Hawk in honor of his role as Wayne Arnold, but both he and Savage thought the opposite roles were better challenges.
Eddie McDowd was the voice of Eddie McDowd on Nickelodeon's series 100 Deeds for season two. He appeared briefly in the 1993 adventure game Return to Zork as the troll king.
Although Hervey's post-Wonder Years acting appearances were few and far between, the actor maintained his links to the sport industry as the creator of several sports-themed videos and specials (a large number of which were related to the World Championship Wrestling association), a handful of made-for-television films, and a handful of television series. Hervey appeared on VH1's I Love the 80s and I Love the 80s, as the 1980s nostalgia swept over television in the early 2000s.
