Janet Varney is an American actress and comedian best known for her role as Becca Barbara in You're the Worst, as well as the Nickelodeon animated television series The Legend of Korra.

Early life

Varney was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona. She graduated from Rincon High School in 1993 as a salutatorian and is an alumna of San Francisco State University, where she majored in theater, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1997. She began pursuing a career in interior design before finding her way back to acting. Varney was raised Mormon, but he left the church at 17 and began to identify as an agnostic. Varney is of both English and Scottish descent.

Personal life

Varney appeared with comedian Chris Hardwick from 2004 to 2011. Varney came out as bisexual in 2018. Varney was diagnosed with depersonalization disorder in early childhood.

Career

Varney was co-host of The Hollywood Show with Brian Unger, a regular participant on Norm Macdonald's sketch show Back to Norm, and an ensemble player on Crossballs, all for Comedy Central. She also appeared in the Fox comedy Happy Hour, which was short-lived. Varney appeared in the short films Random Acts of Kindness, Die Hardly Working, Eternal Waters, Worldly Possession, The Losers, Keep Off Grass, and Dress for Success, which were produced during the reality show On the Lot. Eve is a recurring character in the web series Back on Topps with Randy and Jason Sklar.

Amy Miller, a television producer who works with Eric and Charlie, began acting in Entourage, a HBO television show. Varney appeared in Best Player, starring Jerry Trainor and Jennette McCurdy. Varney appeared on IFC's Stan Against Evil as Sheriff Evie Barret opposite John C. McGinley. After three seasons, the show was cancelled in 2019.

She worked with Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka in creating Neil's Puppet Dreams in 2012.

She created, produced, and starred in Fortune Rookie, an 8-ep episode web series produced by IFC in 2018.

Varney also acts as host on ESCAPE!, a web series on Geek & Sundry, in which teams of celebrities work together to get out of an escape room.

Varney's 2005 appearance as the host of TBS' Dinner and a Movie replaced Lisa Kushell. During the planning of a fun dinner based on certain topics, she appeared with Paul Gilmartin and Claud Mann in each episode, introducing films and injecting humor. In 2011, the series was cancelled.

Varney has written and performed numerous comedic audio commentaries for films with fellow SF Sketchfest co-founder Cole Stratton. These appear on the RiffTrax Presents website under RiffTrax Presents brand, as they are officially sanctioned by RiffTrax founder and Mystery Science Theater 3000 slamnus Michael J. Nelson.

Varney is the co-founder, creative director, and producer of SF Sketchfest, the San Francisco Comedy Festival, and he also co-founded Totally False People, a San Francisco sketch group. She is a founding member of the Theme Park Improv, a Los Angeles-based improv group. She was a member of the Los Angeles and San Francisco-based group Sequel 4000. The JV Club, she launched a podcast in March 2012, and she appeared on Nerdist.com from 2012 to 2018. In November 2018, the JV Club would join the Maximum Fun network.

Varney appears on improv comedy podcast Spontaneanation with Paul F. Tompkins, where she is referred to as "Little Janet" Varney. She is also one of the original cast members of the improvised SciFi podcast Voyage to the Stars and the podcast Thrilling Adventure Hour.
