Jan Zaveck Career

Professional career

At the age of 16, Zavec began boxing. He competed in the 1995, 1997, and 1999 World championships as an amateur.

Zavec turned pro in 2003, winning his first 26 fights. Zavec was briefly signed with Don King early in his career, but the legendary promoter was unable to find him bouts in Europe. Zavec, who recommenced his career with SES Boxing in Germany, has won a variety of international awards, including the WBO and IBF Inter-Continental and German Welterweight titles.

Zavec traveled to Poland in 2008 to meet Rafal Jackiewicz for the EBU European Welterweight Championship. A tumultuous split decision was declared in the Polish fighter's favour after twelve rounds. This was Zavec's first competitive loss.

In a dramatic surprise by knockout, Zavec captured the IBF welterweight title against South African Isaac Hlatshwayo on December 11, 2009. Zavec became Slovenia's first-ever boxing world champion with this win.

For the first time against Rodolfo Martnez in Ljubljana, Zavec defended the IBF welterweight title against him at the Tivoli Hall. In the twelfth round, he beat him by technical knockout when the referee called the match to a halt.

Zavec defended the IBF welterweight title for the second time against mandatory challenger Rafa Jackiewicz at the Stolena Arena in Ljubljana on September 4, 2010. Zavec retaliated in defeating Jackiewicz, his first act as a professional wrestler at the time.

Zavec had been supposed to meet the winner of Randall Bailey-Said Ouali IBF title-eliminator, but it was called a no contest. Zavec opted for an optional defense in Ljubljana as a nominated challenger was unveiled. Zavec defended the IBF welterweight crown for the third time against #15-ranked Paul Delgado, who appeared again at the Stoice Arena in front of 12,000 fans on February 18, 2011. He took the fifth round after a technical knockout, but the referee called the match off.

After trying to beat Paulie Malignaggi on the Saul Alvarez-Ryan Rhodes undercard, Zavec traveled to Biloxi, Mississippi, to face former WBC light-welterweight champion Andre Berto on HBO on September 3, 2011. Despite being a 4-to-1 underdog going into the fight, Zavec was adamant; throwing clean punches with Berto and receiving accolades from HBO's Roy Jones Jr. A number of cuts were made on Zavec's face in the fifth round, resulting in the Zavec's corner being kicked off the fight before the sixth round. Zavec's reign as the IBF welterweight champion came to an end thanks to the defeat.

Zavec competed for three years after losing the IBF World Championship and challenging Erislandy Lara for the WBA and IBO Super Welterweight titles in a TKO loss.

Zavec announced his retirement from boxing on March 13, 2016, at a press conference attended by Slovene President Borut Pahor.
