When she posed for Slovenian fashion photographer Stane Jerko, she began modeling at five years old and began doing commercial work at sixteen. She adapted the Slovene version of her last name "Knavs" to the German version "Knauss" when she first began modeling as a model. Knauss, a child in Milan, Italy, has joined a modelling company. She was named runner-up in the Jana Magazine's "Look of the Year" competition in 1992, which promised to its top three contestants an international modeling contract. Knauss modeled for fashion houses in Paris and Milan, where she first met Metropolitan Models co-owner Paolo Zampolli, a friend of her future husband Donald Trump, who was on a scouting trip in Europe in 1995. Zampolli urged her to visit the United States, where he said he would like to represent her. In 1996, Knauss moved to Manhattan. In Zeckendorf Towers in Union Square, he arranged for her to share an apartment with photographer Matthew Atanian.

"Melania was one of the most popular models in 2016," Donald Trump said, and she shot several photo shoots, including for newspapers and major magazines.
