Early life
Delay was born in Hamburg on August 25, 1976. He attended Helene-Lange-Gymnasium from 1986 to 1995.
Career
Delay was identified as one of the pioneering German hip hop group Beginner in the 1990s. Young Deenay, a pop music performance in the 1990s, is a reference to him: the delay/echo has a major effect on reggae and dancehall music.
His somewhat nasal voice is Delay's most notable feature. He also changes his stage name based on his current musical style, mood, and collaboration partners. Bald, he often wears a hat and sunglasses.
In 1997, Delay formed Eimsbush, a German hip-hop band, with friends from the Hamburg hip-hop scene. The label's main aim was to support and guide new underground talent and paved their way into the music market without having them "selling out" to the major labels. The label was born by the German hip hop scene during a boom period in the mid and late 90s, which resulted in "every Horst [jerk] being allowed to rap if only he has a microphone." (Jan Delay, MTV Germany, 2007). As a result, genuine talent stepped back for fear of being seen as sellouts by the underground hip-hop scene.
The label was shut down in 2003 due to financial issues and as a result of the "naive belief in talent outside the mainstream" model.
