NATHAN SALT AT ST MARY'S: When Matthjis de Ligt faced a crisis of confidence over the summer he sought out a psychologist to make sense of the storm cloud hanging over him. Failing to play a single minute at Euro 2024 despite the Netherlands going all the way to the semi-finals, and with Bayern Munich seemingly ready to move him on, the 2018 Golden Boy - given to the best player in Europe under the age of 21 - was beginning to feel like people were giving up on him. 'These kinds of moments can be tough,' he said over the summer.
After Poland's Jan Bednarek caught him in the head while clearing the ball, West Ham warrior Tomas Soucek shows his gruesome battle scars after getting a step closer to Euro 2024

After being booted in the head during the Czech Republic's Euro 2024 qualifier against Poland, West Ham star Tomas Soucek has demonstrated his battle wounds. During Friday night's match in Warsaw, the Czech captain was trapped on the forehead by Southampton defender Jan Bednarek as he swung his leg to clear the ball. Soucek had to be bandaged up, but he was able to complete the game after scoring what seemed to be a crucial equalizing goal in the 1-1 draw.

Martinelli and Bednarek clashed over a long ball forward by Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale about halfway through the first half, with the Poland native getting a greater lift than the winger. Martinelli didn't leap and instead stayed still, allowing Bednarek to flip over him and onto his back as if he was supposed to win the ball. The defender suffered a lot on his upper back and neck region and was down for a long time as he was being treated by both Southampton's physicians and Arsenal's. Despite his pleas that he was allowed to continue, he was arrested shortly thereafter as a result of concussion testing.
