"Whistler's Mother" was a Gilded Age artist who was associated with the Tonalism movement and was best known for his drawing "Whistler's Mother" from 1871.

Before Fame

He attended West Point's United States Military Academy, but was suspended from the service as a result of his poor grades and deplorable conduct.

Trivia

"Symphony in White, No. 61," he began painting "Symphony in White, No. 1. 1: "The White Girl" from 1861 depicted his art director and mistress Joanna Hiffernan.

Family Life

He was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, to George Washington Whistler and Anna Matilda McNeill. He lived in Russia (where his father worked as an engineer) for a part of his childhood and studied at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts.

Associated With

He often thought of his paintings in musical terms, naming them nocturnes, harmonies, and the like. This pattern of thinking was certainly influenced by author Theophile Gautier's work.
