Joe Greenstein Life

Joseph L. Greenstein (January 2, 1893 – October 8, 1977), also known as The Mighty Atom, was a twentieth-century strongman.

Early life

In 1893, Greenstein was born in Suwa, Poland, to a Jewish family. As an infant, he suffered from respiratory diseases, and a team of doctors predicted that he would die from tuberculosis at the age of 14. Champion Volanko, a Russian circus strongman who coached Greenstein, became acquainted with him around the time. Greenstein spent eighteen months with Volanko and the Issakoff Brothers Circus, learning the strongman's preparations. He returned to Poland and married Leah, his wife, after this.

Joe Greenstein Career

Career

He began his wrestling career as a wrestler. However, he left for the United States after part due in large part to rising anti-Semitism in Eastern Europe. He began working as a dockworker and oil field worker in Galveston, Texas. Kid Greenstein was also grappling competitively at this time. According to The Houston Daily News in 1914, a friend of Greenstein mistakenly shot him in the middle of the forehead. According to the report, the bullet did not penetrate his skull and "flattened out against his forehead." Greenstein's fascination with strength sparked his curiosity in mental capabilities, which led to a series of strongman accomplishments.

In the 1976 Guinness Book of World Records, he was featured five times in Ripley's Believe It Or Not and in the Guinness Book of World Records. Biting through an iron nail and bending iron horseshoes by hand were two of Greenstein's accomplishments. At the Weightlifting Hall of Fame in York, Pennsylvania, an iron nail and iron horseshoes are on display.

Greenstein also sold coconut oil soaps and health elixirs at farmers' markets later in life. He traveled in an old Model A truck with panels that opened to display his extensive collection of newsclippings and citations from civic leaders and organizations. Mayor LaGuardia of New York City issued a proclamation lauding Greenstein for his contributions to the city's police service. During World War II, Greenstein was volunteered to teach jujutsu techniques to members of the New York City auxiliary police. It was many years before the technique was known to the majority of Americans.

Greenstein maintained his strongman appearances well into his eighties, appearing in his last appearance at his great-grandchild's first birthday on May 11, 1977, at Madison Square Garden at the age of 84. With the palm of his hand, he stunned the audience by bending horseshoes and spearing spikes through metal.
