Life and career
Jacques Février was born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, the son of composer Henry Février. He studied at the Conservatoire de Paris with Édouard Risler and Marguerite Long, winning the premier prix in 1921. In the first performance of Francis Poulenc's Concerto for Two Pianos in 1932, he and the composer were the soloists. Despite Paul Wittgenstein's premiere of Maurice Ravel's Concerto for the Left Hand, Février was specifically chosen by the composer to be the first French pianist to perform the piece. When Wittgenstein's sole right to perform the piece came to an end in 1937, Février premiered in Paris and then in Boston with conductor Sergei Koussevitsky. He made several recordings of the French repertoire, winning a Grand Prix du Disque of the Charles Cros Academy in 1963 for his recording of Ravel's piano performances.
He also worked at the Conservatoire de Paris, where his students included Gabriel Tacchino, Alain Planès, and Valerie Tryon.
He died in Épinal in September 1979, just weeks after being struck by a motorcycle while walking in the countryside.
