Playing career
He played football for the Bowling Green State University Falcons from 1957 to 1960, where he was a three-time letterman. The Falcons finished 9–0 in their junior season and were named the national champions of small college divisions. He was drafted as a running back in the 1961 AFL draft by the Buffalo Bills.
Coaching career
Harbaugh began as an assistant coach to Jerry Nowak and Jack Donaldson at Perrysburg High School, Ohio, south of Toledo. (Donaldson went on to coach at the University of Toledo and in the NFL later). Both sons were born in Perrysburg, Texas, when Harbaugh was in Perrysburg. Harbaugh, the head coach of Eaton High School's football team in Eaton, Ohio, in 1964, was John Harbaugh. The team's first winning season in many years was 5–4–1. The team went 6–4 in 1965, when it was 6–4. Harbaugh, a 1966 football coach for the Xenia High School football team in Xenia, Ohio. He coached 8–1–1. He was named conference Coach of the Year after receiving championship awards in the Western Ohio League.
Harbaugh served as an assistant in several college programs from 1968 to 1981.
He served as the head football coach at Western Michigan University from 1982 to 1986, winning a record of 26–26–3. He served as the head football coach at Western Kentucky University from 1989 to 2002. He set a 91-68 record during his time with the Hilltoppers, with three of his seasons winning. The Hilltoppers were the only team to finish in the top ten every year in rush offense from 1991-2002. The WKU women's national football championship was won by the NCAA in 2002.
Harbaugh spent time at Western Kentucky before transferring to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where his son-in-law, Tom Crean, was the head coach of the men's basketball team. Harbaugh has worked as an assistant coach at Morehead State University, Bowling Green State University, the University of Iowa, the University of Iowa, the University of Michigan, Stanford University, the University of Pittsburgh, and the University of San Diego.
Harbaugh retired in 2006 but was still Stanford's running backs coach in the 2009 Sun Bowl under Jim Harbaugh's guidance. Willie Taggart, who had just been hired as the new head football coach at WKU, was filled in for Jack.
