Club career
Stam, a born in Kampen, Overijssel, began his playing career with local amateur football club DOS Kampen. Stam scored in a 1–1 draw against SC Heracles in the Eerste Divisie on August 15, 1992. He arrived in the Eerste Divisie right away and went to Cambuur Leeuwarden for the following season, but was recalled in his first season. Willem II, a member of Cambuur, has been a transfer to Eivisie club Cambuur. He immediately impressed at Willem II, his first appearance on Ebolisie, which was his last breakthrough. Stam's transfer to PSV Eindhoven in the same season as they then won the KNVB Cup, his first professional trophy, came after a surprising 1–0 home win over Ajax.
In the 1996-97 season, Stam was a key player for PSV, as the team defeated the Economie league championship and the Johan Cruyf Shield. Stam was named VVCS Footballer of the Year for the individual.
When Manchester United bought him for £10.6 million in 1998, he became the country's second most expensive defender in history.
Stam spent three seasons at Manchester United, during which the club gained three Premier League titles, one FA Cup, the Intercontinental Cup, and the UEFA Champions League were all won. In a 6–2 away win over Leicester City, he scored his only goal for the club.
Stam was allegedly sold to Lazio, Italy, early in the 2001–02 season, after Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was reportedly furious by the allegations against him in his autobiography Head to Head. Stam made several remarks in his book about his stance against players, including the allegations that Ferguson's offer to buy him was carried out without PSV's permission. Ferguson's defensive numbers had been decreasing according to initial reports, according to Simon Kuper, who later stated that contrary to initial reports, the defender's numbers had decreased and that the defender was approaching his playing peak. Laurent Blanc was signed as his replacement.
Ferguson called the decision to sell Stam an error in 2007: "He had just recovered from an achilles injury and we assumed he had just lost a little bit." We got the Lazio centre back who was 29 years old, £16.5 million. It was an offer I couldn't refuse. It was a mistake in playing terms, but not in playing terms. He's still playing for Ajax at a very high level." Manchester United reported the fee was £15.3 million, according to Lazio's, who reported that the bill was £16 million.
Following a Serie A game, Stam was found guilty of having the banned steroid nandrolone in his system, which was later reduced by a month after appeals. He was the second Lazio player suspended in 2001 after Fernando Couto. He lifted the Coppa Italia in his last season with the club.
After UEFA Euro 2004 in Milan, Stam joined Milan. In 2005, he reached his second Champions League final with the Rossoneri, but he was a runner-up after his team was eliminated by Liverpool in a penalty shoot-out.
He was announced on January 30, 2006, that he would return to the Elementia and play for Ajax, where he had signed a two-year deal for a €2.5 million transfer fee. On his first visit to the club, Stam was named team captain. He won both the Johan Cruyf Shield and the KNVB Cup in his first season; another Johan Cruyf Shield was added to his trophies in the 2007–08 season.
After playing six league games for Ajax in the 2007–08 league season, Stam announced his retirement from professional football with immediate effect on October 29, 2007. On October 20, 2007, he was in a 0–0 draw against NEC in his last game.

He was not initially selected for UEFA Euro 1996, but was later admitted to the squad after an accident forced out Frank de Boer; he did not appear at the tournament. In a 3–1 home victory over Belgium in World Cup qualification, he scored his first goal on September 6, 1997. He was also a key player in the Dutch team that placed fourth in the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
He reached the semi-finals with the Dutch team, hosted in his home country and Belgium during UEFA Euro 2000. In a loss to Italy, Stam missed his chance in the penalty shoot-out in the semi-finals by hitting the ball over the bar. He was not supposed to make a penalty but was forced to do so due to replacements and exhaustion among his teammates.
At UEFA Euro 2004 in Portugal, Stam reached his third semi-finals in an international competition with his country, but after the tournament, he pulled out of international football. He wanted to concentrate on his current squad, Milan, as well as his family, which was the reason for his international departure.
He played 67 games for the Netherlands, scoring three goals in total.
