Ivan Davis Life

Ivan Roy Davis, Jr. (February 4, 1932 – March 12, 2018) was a nationally renowned American classical pianist and a member of the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami for more than four decades.

Early life

Davis was born in Electra, Texas. He earned his Bachelor of Music from the University of North Texas College of Music in 1952 and an Artist's Diploma from the Santa Cecilia Academy in Rome as a Fulbright Scholar. In the 1958 St. Cecilia Piano Competition, he took second prize in the 1956 and 1957 Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition and first prize in the St. Cecilia Piano Competition. Davis won the Franz Liszt Competition at Town Hall, New York City, in April 1960. Davis worked with Silvio Scionti, Carlo Zecchi, and Vladimir Horowitz.

Performance and recording career

In 1959, he made his debut at the Town Hall of New York City. Davis made his international debut at the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto. In 1960, he signed with CBS Records and began a 60-country tour. He performed with many major orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Spanish National Orchestra. He appeared under such world-famous conductors as Leonard Bernstein, Eugene Ormandy, and Lorin Maazel. He was honoured with the Handel Medallion in New York City for his contributions to the city's cultural life. In the 1970s, he appeared on London Records. Davis, a professor of music at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, from 1965 to present. "His Queen Elizabeth Hall's debut in London in 1968 caused a lot of buzz and has since become a collector's item on record," Grove Music Online reports. Further recordings, many of 19th-century showpieces, have showcased his indelible zeal and technical brilliance, most notably a Gottschalk recital of true virtuoso flair." Richard Kastle, an American classical pianist, was his pupil for more than three years.
