Early life

Born Merwyn Bogue in North East, Pennsylvania, he and his family moved to Erie, Pennsylvania, a few months after his birth.

Personal life

Merwyn Bogue was known informally as "Mern." Merwyn (known as Peter), born 1937; Pamela, 1940; and Janet, 1941.

In 1961, Bogue was granted a license to sell real estate and began to be profitable in his new career. In his memoir, he recalled, "I loved selling real estate." "In a sense, selling real estate is similar to being in show business." I prefer to talk to a man and his wife rather than speaking to a large audience. The applause occurs when they write the check, and if they do not write the check, it means they did a bad job." By 1973, Bogue and his wife were living in Hawaii. Bogue received two double-takes from potential clients who saw his trademark haircut and read his company card: "Ish Kabibble, Sales Manager."

Bogue died in Joshua Tree, California, from respiratory failure attributed to respiratory disease and emphysema.

Ish Kabibble Career

Career

Bogue studied law at West Virginia University, but his comedic antics soon found a following. He appeared in ten films between 1939 and 1950. He appeared in Thousands Cheer (1943) and performed "I Dug a Ditch," with Kay Kyser, and sang "I Dug a Ditch," and he appeared in That's Right —You're Wrong (1939), You'll Find Out (1940), and Playmates (1941). In addition,, he appeared with Kyser on the radio and television quiz show Kay Kyser's Kollege of Musical Knowledge in 1949 and 1950.

In his 1989 autobiography, Bogue spoke about his stage name, which he took from the lyrics of one of his comedic songs, "Isch ga-bibble."

"Ische ga bibble?" a narrator in a mock-Yiddish tune, and the song derived from a witty saying. "I should be concerned," was ostensibly meaning "I should be concerned." "It's me worry," says the author, "but not coincidental" association with the "What makes me afraid." Alfred E. Neuman, Mad Magazine's mascot, has a motto. Although this derivation has been widely circulated on the internet and elsewhere, the expression "ische ga bibble" is not Yiddish and actually contains no Yiddish words. However, there is also a Yiddish word "nisht gefidlt," which means "it doesn't matter to me" and from which the phrase "ish kabibble" derives.

Despite the fact that Bogue's stage persona was a gangling goof, the fact that he was also the patron of the Kay Kyser Orchestra for the most part of its existence. During the summer of 1947, Kyser disbanded the orchestra, but in October 1949, it was revived for a television show. During Spike Jones' hiatus, he recruited Bogue to appear as Ish Kabibble in Jones' zany band the City Slickers. Bogue wasn't concerned about the occasion, but he was with the Jones band for a short time. Bogue was one of only four members of the Kyser band to return for the television show, which lasted 14 months. On Christmas Day, 1950, Kyser retired from show business, and the band played well.

With the demise of the big bands, Bogue performed as a solo comedian or in company with his old Kyser associate Mike Douglas.
