Chaiken co-created The L Word in 2004, largely inspired by her own experiences as a lesbian. Marina Ferrer and Jenny Schecter's first love, which culminated in heartache when the woman revealed she had a long-distance girlfriend, served as a nifty precursor for the characters' friendship.
OurChart, a social networking network for lesbians and their families, was launched in 2007 by she and a group of women in the entertainment and tech industries. OurChart was online before 2008, but it was decommissioned in 2008. A spin-off show of The Farm was in production at the time, and two pilots were being written by Chaiken, but Showtime never purchased the series.
Chaiken produced a documentary for Showtime in 2014. The sin is L Word Mississippi: Hate the Sin. Several lesbian women were interviewed in the Deep South, focusing on their experiences of being gay in the Deep South. Chaiken appeared on ABC's The Black Box during this period, but it was later cancelled after one season.
Chaiken is credited with the first establishing of The Handmaid's Tale, a hit Hulu original film. Chaiken left the project early to become the show-runner on Fox's Empire, but he was still listed as an executive producer.
Showtime also announced that it had ordered a full season of The L Word in January 2019. The show titled The L Word: Generation Q on December 8, 2019, and picks up where the original series ended ten years ago, set ten years later.
Little Chicken Productions, her company, has signed a Universal Television exclusive deal. Chaiken co-created the show Law & Order: Organized Crime, a spin-off of the long-running series Law & Order, which premiered in 2020. She served as a writer and showrunner for the series for the first year, but was fired by Barry O'Brien midway through the series's production.
