Wu was born in Hong Kong on March 27, 1990. He studied at Lam Tin Methodist Primary School, Diocesan Boys' School, before being accepted to Hang Seng School of Commerce, where he advanced his degree studies in Hong Kong Polytechnic University (major in Management) and graduated in 2013.

Wu made the Most Improved contestant on the show in 2010, as well as the first runner-up of the competition. He ended up signing a manager's deal with Television Broadcast Limited (TVB). He also represented Hong Kong in the 2010 TVB International New Talent Singing Championship, winning first place in the first year. He represented Hong Kong in the CMB Chin Chin Star Festival (Korea), where he received the bronze medal.

Wu signed a record deal with Stars Shine International on February 6, 2012, and his debut album, Couple Getaway, was released on September 14th. For the first week after its debut, it topped the albums charts. He performed his first mini-concert 'NEWAY MUSIC LIVE X Hubert Wu Concert' on November 11th, with Joyce Cheng as a guest and Hins Cheung as a mystery visitor. His album received gold medal recognition at the same time. He later became the Best New Artist from Metro Hits, RTHK Top ten Gold Songs Awards, and Jade Solid Gold Best New Artist Award Presentation. He had announced Couple Getaway (Dual Edition Live +) in 2013 as a result of Couple Getaway's popularity.

Wu's second full-length album, The Butterfly Lovers, was released on October 2nd, 2013 due to the soundtrack's commercial success. Shine International went bankrupt, and he signed the new deal with Voice Entertainment.
