Howard Winchel Koch (April 11, 1916 – February 16, 2001) was an American producer and television director.
Life and career
Koch was born in New York City and the son of Beatrice (Winchel) and William Jacob Koch. His family was Jewish. In Hightstown, New Jersey, he attended DeWitt Clinton High School and the Peddie School. He began his film career as an employee at Universal Studios in New York but as an assistant director in 1947, he made his Hollywood debut. He appeared as a producer for the first time in 1953, and a year later made his directorial debut. Paramount Pictures hired him as head of film production in 1964, a position he held until 1966 before he left to form his own production company. He had been working with Paramount for more than 15 years.
Howard W. Koch appeared on eight occasions in his numerous television productions. He served as President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from 1977 to 1979, devoted to the profession. In 1990, the Academy awarded him with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, and in 1991, the Directors Guild of America presented him with the Frank Capra Achievement Award.
Howard Koch, a children's actor, and actress Telly Savalas, won many prestigious California youth races, including the Norfolk Stakes and Del Mar Futurity, together with actor Howard Savalas.
Howard W. Koch died in Beverly Hills, California, on February 16, 2001, at his home. He had two children from his 64-year marriage to Ruth Pincus, who died in March 2009. Hawk Koch, his son, was elected to the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2004.
