Hosea Gear Career

Rugby career

With 14 tries in a provincial season in the 2008 Air New Zealand Cup, he now holds the record for most attempts in a provincial season. He has played for the New Zealand Maori. He was selected for the All Blacks to tour Hong Kong and Europe on October 26, 2008, after his outstanding results for Wellington in the 2008 Air New Zealand Cup, and he made his debut against Australia in the Bledisloe Cup on October 1st. Gear made his Rugby Sevens debut in the 2010 Commonwealth Games for New Zealand in 2010 and was selected for the All Blacks' end-of-year tour. Gear was given a starting spot against England after Cory Jane's injury, a game in which he scored for the first time. In the All Blacks' 49-3 victory, the following week vs. Scotland Gear scored the first attempt and then went on to score another. Gear scored the first try in the All Blacks vs. Wales match, but he's also scored another to cap off a memorable international year.

Gear was barely allowed to be selected in the 2011 Rugby World Cup for the New Zealand squad. Gear was called up ahead of the Semi final match against the Wallabies after a string of injuries to the All Black's squad. He was not selected in the twenty-two man squad to play the game. After the final, which New Zealand won 8–7, he received a World Cup champion's medal, but he was not in the match-day 22.

Hosea Gear ended his rugby career when he switched from a player-coach to the first XV coach for East Coast in late 2021. He has also coached the Ngati Porou East Coast rugby team.
