Hermes Franca Career

Mixed martial arts career

França made his professional Mixed Martial Arts debut on November 17, 2001, defeating future WEC Featherweight Champion Mike Skinner. He quickly earned an undefeated streak of 6–0, placing all his opponents under the stress of the second round, attracting the attention of the UFC.

França made his UFC debut at UFC 42 by defeating Richard Crunkilton by unanimous vote. Since being drawn with B.J., he won his second UFC match against Caol Uno (who barely escaped the lightweight championship). The footballer at UFC 44 had a majority vote before losing to Josh Thomson at UFC 46.

His next outing in the UFC was dissatisfied, losing the match by a split decision. Edwards would win by a split decision in their match against França: America vs. World, 2005, in a very bad year for the Brazilian fighter, with three consecutive losses in a row.

However, 2006 will be a much better year for França. Gabe Ruediger, the WEC Lightweight champion, was deposed in March in March by beating him out of the WEC Lightweight championship and then knocked out Team Quest's Ryan Schultz to win the AFC Lightweight Championship in April.

França continued his winning streak against Toby Imada and Brandon Olsen before deciding to face Roger Huerta at UFC 61 in July. Despite França's opponent being changed – Huerta was forced to miss due to injury – but França's return to UFC was still fruitful, stopping Jordan in the third round by a triangle choke submission.

França had accepted a late-notice brawl with Jamie Varner at UFC 62 on August 4, 2006. Spencer Fisher, who suffered his back while training for the fight, was brought on by França as a late replacement. França was victorious despite losing on short notice, defeating Varner in an armbar brawl in the third round.

França defended his WEC Lightweight title against Nathan Diaz, brother of UFC veteran Nick Diaz, on October 24, extending França's winning streak to seven straight victories since 2006.

França won his match against Spencer Fisher at UFC Fight Night 8 by TKO in the second round; after his triumph he lay down on his knees (à la Georges St-Pierre), he begged UFC President Dana White to give him a championship shot against Sean Sherk. During a press conference, White announced that França will face Silva at UFC 73 for a championship shot. França lost by a unanimous decision to Sean Sherk. Following his championship match at UFC 73, França tested positive for the banned drug Drostanolone in a post-fight drug examination, according to the California State Athletic Commission on July 19, 2007. He had been barred from playing in California until July 5, 2008, and had been fined $2,500.

He has since left The Armory and was then booted from their main site as an instructor.

Franca spent early January 2008 assisting BJ Penn with his five-round match against Joe Stevenson in the vacant UFC lightweight championship at UFC 80.

França lost his first fight in the UFC since his suspension in 2007 to Frankie Edgar by unanimous decision on July 19, 2008.

Marcus Aurélio was then defeated by a unanimous decision at UFC 90 on October 25, 2008.

França was scheduled to face Joe Lauzon on February 7 in the main event for UFC Fight Night 17. França, on the other hand, suffered with a torn anterior ligament in his right knee. França made his return to action against Tyson Griffin on September 19, 2009, at UFC 103. Franca lost his fight to Tyson Griffin in the second round of TKO (Punches) after Griffin catches him with a straight right followed by pounding ground and pound, ultimately knocking out França for his second straight TKO loss.

França was fired by the organization, as well as other UFC veterans, Chris Wilson, Marcus Aurélio, and Justin McCully after his humiliation at UFC 103.

Franca reported through his boss, Reed Wallace, that following Eric Wisely's loss and losing four out of his last five fights, he announced his resignation.

Franca has since come out of retirement and has bounced back from a 0-3-1 record in four fights in 2010. Franca won by submission in February 2011 and then won two games over Josh Thorpe and Robert Washington.

Ferrid Kheder was awarded a judge's decision at the Xtreme Valu Todo 5 event in Costa Rica on December 19, 2010, before the promoter, Lu Dwyer, attempted to reverse it, causing a lot of controversies. All three judges and the referee had voted in favour of Franca, according to the fight's announcer. Regardless of the actual results, Lu Dwyer declared Kheder the winner, and another promoter raised Kheder's hand in victory, after the referee refused to do so.

Because Kheder is primarily funded by Dwyer and her company J & L Irrigation, there could be a potential conflict of interest. Team FK" is sponsored by Dwyer's living expenses and receiving a share of his winnings.

Ferrid Kheder, a controversial decision maker, revealed on his Facebook page that Dwyer decided to rematch the fight result to a "No Contest" and called a "No Contest" instead.

Franca appeared to be back on track, winning at MFC 29 and being scheduled in to face Drew Fickett for the promotion's vacant lightweight championship at MFC 30 on June 10, 2011. Franca turned himself in to Clackamas County Sheriff's police in mid-May 2011 and was charged with multiple sexual battery charges. It was related to him sexually abusing a child at his training center in Clackamas, OR. Franca's deal was suspended on May 19, 2011 by MFC president Mark Pavelich, blaming the detention and Franca's two times outside of the company for breaching his employment.

Franca pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful entry and was sentenced to 42 months in state prison; after he completed his prison term and must register as a sex offender, he was given a four-and-a-half years probation.

Franca returned from a three-year layoff and met Marcio Breno at Extreme Fighter: Nordeste on August 28, 2014, following his arrest and deportation to Brazil. He lost in the first round after being knocked out of the tournament.
