Hasheem Thabeet Life

Hasheem Thabeet (born Hashim Thabit Manka on February 16, 1987) is a Tanzanian professional basketball player for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA G League.

He played college basketball for UConn before being selected second overall in the 2009 NBA draft by the Memphis Grizzlies, who were drafted second overall. He was deemed a draft bust because he was ranked 2nd overall owing to his lack of success.

Early life

When he first started to watch pick-up games in Tanzania at the age of 15, Thabeet did not begin to play basketball until the age of 15. Thabeet was fluent in Swahili when first recruited from Tanzania, but not so much English. He played high school basketball at Cypress Christian School in Houston, Texas, where he graduated in 2006.

College career

He averaged 6.2 points and 3.8 blocks per game as a freshman for the Connecticut Huskies. Thabeet set a new UConn record for blocks in a game with 10. Thabeet and his colleague Jerome Dyson were among the 2007 All-Big East Rookie Team members.

He saw his minutes increase as a sophomore and hit 10.5 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 4.5 blocks. In the Huskies' 73–67 loss at University of Notre Dame on January 5, 2008, he tied his career high in blocks with ten blocks. Thabeet was named Big East Defensive Player of the Year and to the All-Big East second team.

Thabeet made a name for himself by being a junior, averaging 13.6 points and 10.8 rebounds. On January 31, 2009, he scored 15 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 blocks for his first career triple-double against Providence College. On the season, he had 152 blocks. He was named Big East Defensive Player of the Year and was co-Big East Player of the Year with Pitt's DeJuan Blair. He was named second in All-America and National Defensive Player of the Year.

On March 26, 2009, Thabeet surpassed the 1,000-point mark against Purdue. He was the third UConn player to do so this season (Jerome Dyson and A. J. ), and he was the third. (Some of the others were cheaper). Thabeet was a leader in UConn's first Final Four appearance since 2004.

Thabeet officially signed for the NBA draft in April 2009, putting an end to his college eligibility.

Professional career

The Memphis Grizzlies selected Thabeet with the second overall pick in the 2009 NBA draft, ahead of James Harden and Stephen Curry, who will be the first Tanzanian-born NBA player to play. He had a season-high five blocks on December 13, 2009.

He was sent to the Dakota Wizards of the NBA Development League on February 25, 2010, becoming the first overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft) to be sent to the D-League. He was recalled by the Grizzlies on March 8, 2010.

In exchange for Shane Battier and Ish Smith, Thabeet was traded with a potential first-round pick to the Houston Rockets on February 24. He was drafted with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on March 21, 2011. He was recalled by the Rockets on April 11, 2011.

Thabeet, Jonny Flynn, and a potential second-round pick were traded to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for Marcus Camby on March 15, 2012.

Thabeet signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder on July 11, 2012. Thabeet scored his first double-double in his career on November 26, 2012, defeating the Charlotte Bobcats by 114-69.

Thabeet was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for a trade exception and a 2015-protected second-round draft pick. He was waived by the 76ers on September 1, 2014, but the 76ers denied him on September 1st.

Thabeet signed with the Detroit Pistons on September 25, 2014. Nonetheless, he was later waived by the Pistons on October 20, 2014.

Thabeet was acquired by the Grand Rapids Drive of the NBA Development League as an affiliate player of the Pistons on November 1, 2014. He averaged 8.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per game in 49 games for the Drive.

Thabeet joined the NBA Select Team for the 2015 NBA Summer League in July 2015.

Thabeet joined the Yokohama B-Corsairs of the Japanese B.League on September 29, 2017.

Thabeet has joined the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA G League for the 2019–20 season. He was first dismissed on January 16, 2020.

Thabeet signed with the Taiwanese P. League+ on September 25, 2020. For the 2020–21 season, he was the league's rebounding leader, blocks leader, and Defensive Player of Year.

Thabeet signed with the Tainan TSG GhostHawks of the Taiwanese T1 League on October 28, 2021. Thabeet will not join the Tainan TSG GhostHawks on December 24, according to Chien Wei-Cheng, the Tainan TSG GhostHawks' general manager.

Thabeet, a 2021 graduate of Savio, Tanzania, coached the team to the Dar es Salaam Regional Basketball League (RBA) title, winning the Finals MVP award.
