Harry Winks Career

Club career

Winks is a product of the Tottenham Hotspur youth programme. He regularly trained with the first-team squad and was named on the senior bench for the first time in a Premier League match against Liverpool on March 30, 2014, remaining an unutilised substitute in a 4–0 loss at Anfield. Winks signed his first professional contract with Tottenham Hotspur on July 27, 2014; according to Winks, Mauricio Pochettino said he wanted to sign Winks right away after watching videos of his performances. In a 1–0 home win over White Hart Lane on November 27, he made his first team appearance against FK Partizan in the UEFA Europa League group, replacing Paulinho after 87 minutes.

Winks signed a new deal with Tottenham Hotspur until 2018, with the option of an extension. He was given the number 29 shirt, which was also on the club's list of first-team members. In a 3–1 victory over Qaraba FK, Winks made his first appearance of the season as a late replacement.

He made his Premier League debut on August 27, 2016, replacing Christian Eriksen in the last minute of the match in a 1–1 draw at home to Liverpool. Winks made his complete debut against West Ham United on November 19th, scoring well and winning his first goal for Spurs, leveling the match at 1-1. After scoring two late goals, Tottenham Hotspur defeated the match 3–2 in a dramatic finish at White Hart Lane. Winks made his FA Cup debut in January 2017 when he was selected for the team against Aston Villa in the third round. Tottenham dominated the match 2–0. Winks signed a new deal with Tottenham on February 14, 2017, extending his stay at the club until 2022. Winks sustained an ankle injury while falling into the Burnley dugout on April 1, 2017 and was later admitted to the hospital for a scan on his ankle. Winks would be out for the remainder of the season as a result of his ankle ligament injury.

Since recovering from his injury, the Winks began the 2017-18 season as replacements in three early games. In an EFL Cup match against Barnsley that ended 1–0, he got off to his first game of the season. He next started playing in a UEFA Champions League away match against APOEL FC, earning him acclaim from Mauricio Pochettino as the "perfect midfielder." He made his first call-up for the national squad after starting with just one previous season in the Premier League (including last season), with a 4–0 victory over Huddersfield Town) and four Premier League starts. He received accolades for his role in the UEFA Champions League game against Real Madrid, where he was adjudged to have held his own against Luka Modri and Toni Kroos. However, he sustained a niggling ankle injury in the match against Crystal Palace on 5 November 5, resulting in him missing the final three months of this season after struggling to play some games despite the pain. On May 17, 2018, he signed a new one, extending his stay at Tottenham Hotspur until 2023.

Winks returned to the squad against Fulham in the 2018-19 season after a long absence due to an injury that necessitated surgery. In the game against Liverpool, where Spurs lost 2–1, he made his first appearance of the season. In the away match against Fulham in January 2019, he scored a last-minute winning goal to win 2–1, his first goal for the club since November 2016. Winks hosted the 2019 UEFA Champions League Final against Liverpool on June 1, 2019.

In July 2019, Winks signed a new five-year contract with Tottenham Hotspur.

In the UEFA Europa League match against Bulgarian side Ludogorets Razgrad, Winks scored his first goal of the 2020-21 season, his first for Tottenham in nearly two years, helping Tottenham beat them 4–0. He scored from 54 yards out, one of the longest goals ever scored in the Europa League, although he denied it was deliberate.

Winks joined Sampdoria on loan for the 2022–23 season, with the option for the transfer to become permanent.

International career

Winks has represented England at a high level. He was able to represent Spain as well as England before this. In 2015, he was a member of the Mercedes-Benz Elite Cup in Germany, where he competed against the under-20 squad. On November 14, Winks made his under-21 debut in England's friendly 3–2 loss to France on November 14, 2016.

Winks was given his first call up to the senior England squad for their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and Lithuania on October 2nd. He made his debut in England's 1–0 away victory over Lithuania, the team's last match in their lucrative 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign. Winks was "England's best performer" on the night, according to BBC Sport's Phil McNulty. Neat and tidy, with a score that almost lost. In the midst of so much mediocrity, eye-catching is a plus. Winks did miss the World Cup due to sickness, but the England squad returned to the England squad against Spain in 2018-19 UEFA Nations League away match against Spain. In what was described as a "self-assured" effort, England defeated Spain by 32-0, the first competitive home loss for the first time since 2003, and England's first victory in 31 years in Spain.

In UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying, Winks scored his first goal for England in a 4–0 victory over Kosovo on November 17, 2019.

How Eric Dier went from Tottenham reject to Bayern Munich's rock at the back to help ignite German giants' quest for Champions League glory... and push for England recall

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 29, 2024
MATT BARLOW: Solid, dependable, vocal. Organising and improving others around him. Also, reviving hopes of an England recall with his international career stuck on 49 caps. It is a classic from the redemption genre. Dier joined Bayern for £3.4million on deadline day, initially on a short-term deal until the end of the season when his Tottenham contract was set to expire but quickly reached the preset clause for appearances to trigger another year in Munich. Steffen Freund, a Spurs icon working as a co-commentator for RTL Germany, Servus TV Austria and international Bundesliga coverage, was among the minority who thought he would be a hit in the Bundesliga.

Leicester's top flight promotion party is set for a nasty hangover as points deductions and player sales loom... but Enzo Maresca deserves huge credit for reviving their spirit

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 28, 2024
TOM COLLOMOSSE: Even the sweetest champagne can cause a painful hangover and despite regaining their Premier League status, Leicester City may all too soon experience the morning after the night before. A season that could end with 100 points and the Championship title is cause for much celebration, but the problem is that the euphoria may not last too long.
