Personal life
Giles is Harry and Melissa Giles' son. He has one brother and three sisters. Harry Giles II, the Giles' father, played both basketball and football at Winston-Salem State University. Jayson Tatum, a former Duke teammate and current NBA player, is a good friend of Giles.
High school career
Giles attended Wesleyan Christian Academy in High Point, North Carolina. Since winning Wesleyan Christian a 2013 NCISAA 3A State Championship with Dallas Mavericks shooting guard Theo Pinson, he averaged 12.5 points per game and 9.5 rebounds per game as a freshman. Due to a left knee injury, the Giles skipped his entire sophomore season. During the 2014 summer, the Giles appeared in the Under Armour Elite 24 game in Brooklyn, New York, finishing with 16 points and 11 rebounds and earning Co-MVP awards.
Giles and Wesleyan were ranked No. 2 in the United States by USA Today in their junior year. In an 82-58 victory over Northside Christian Academy, Harry scored a career-high 38 points and grabbed 19 rebounds in his second game back from injury. Giles won 67–62 over Mater Dei on December 21, snapping the team's 46-game victory streak. The Trojans and Giles then competed in the 2014-2015 High School OT Holiday Invitational Tournament at Needham B. Broughton High School in Raleigh, North Carolina. Giles and Wesleyan defeated Word of God Christian Academy (98–85) behind Giles 31 points and 17 rebounds in the championship game on December 29, 2006. The Giles defeated the Orangeville Prep team, who had a former top player on the 2016 Thon Maker. By USA Today, Giles earned first-team All-USA recognition at the end of his junior season. Giles will be a member of the Phoenix Suns and fellow Winston-Salem native and NBA superstar Chris Paul. In 16 games on the EYBL circuit, the Giles averaged 18.2 points per game and 12.0 rebounds per game, winning first-team All-EYBL accolades. The Giles decided to attend and play for the high school basketball powerhouse Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, prior to his senior season. Giles dominated the majority of his high school career; however, his senior year ended with a torn ACL in his right knee. He sustained the injury in his first scrimmage game with Oak Hill. Giles enrolled in (now defunct) Forest Trail Academy in Kernersville, North Carolina, to complete his senior year of high school while recovering from his knee injury. Giles made his verbal promise to attend Duke University and play for the Duke Blue Devils on ESPN on November 6, 2015. Giles was rated as a five-star recruiter and as the best high school candidate of the 2016 class. College career
The Giles were rated to both Naismith and John R. Wooden Award preseason watchlists before the 2016–17 season, as well as finishing third in ACC Preseason Rookie of the Year voting. On October 3, 2016, Giles will likely have surgery on his knee. Giles beat Tennessee State on December 19, 2016, marking his college debut for the Giles. In a victory over Georgia Tech on January 4, 2017, he produced his first double-double with ten points and 12 rebounds. In a (95–83) victory over North Carolina in the ACC tournament semi-finals against rival North Carolina, Giles had 4 blocks, 7 rebounds, and 6 points.
Giles declared at the end of his freshman season that he would forego his final three years of college eligibility at Duke and enter the 2017 NBA draft.
Professional career
Giles was the 20th overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft on June 22, 2017. On draft night, his rights were eventually sold to the Sacramento Kings. The Giles will be out for the entire 2017 NBA Summer League. Giles signed his rookie scale contract with the Kings worth $10.6 million over four years on July 8, 2017. Giles would make his NBA debut in January 2018. Giles will be without a season until the fall of 2018.
The Sacramento Bee revealed that the Giles would play in the California Classic Summer League on July 2, 3, 5, and 5 in Sacramento on May 14, 2018. Giles joined the Kings in the 2018 NBA Summer League. Giles scored 2 points in his NBA debut against the Utah Jazz on October 17, 2018. Giles was sent to the Stockton Kings, the Kings' G-League affiliate, where he scored 30 points in his first season with the team on November 10, 2018. The Kingsrecalled Giles on November 11, 2018. In a 135-113 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on January 31, 2019, Giles scored a career-high 20 points and 7 rebounds for their career-best 20 points and 7 rebounds.
