Harold Lincoln Gray (January 20, 1894-1894 – May 9, 1968) was an American cartoonist best known as the creator of the newspaper comic strip Little Orphan Annie.
Early life
Harold Gray was born in Kankae, Illinois, on January 20, 1894, to Estella Mary (née Rosencrans) and Ira Lincoln Gray, a farmer. Both parents died before he finished high school in 1912 in West Lafayette, Indiana, where the family had lived. He started working in 1913 at a Lafayette daily, making him his first newspaper job. He could trace his ancestry back to 17th-century settlers. He grew up on farms in Illinois and Indiana, and he worked in construction to fund his college tuition at Purdue University. He earned his engineering degree in 1917.
Gray sought out cartoonist John T. McCutcheon for tips on how to break into the cartooning field. He was unable to get cartooning jobs immediately, but McCutcheon's influence made him work as a reporter for the Chicago Tribune before enlisting in World War I, where he was a bayonet instructor for six months. After being discharged from the military, he returned to the Chicago Tribune and remained until 1919, when he returned to freelance in commercial art. He became a Freemason in 1923, while living in Lombard, Illinois.
