Raina Telgemeier Career

Career

Telgemeier's time as a student at the School of Visual Arts began attending small-press festivals, including the MoCCA Festival, in which she sold self-published autobiographical books and vignettes from her life. Between 2002 and 2005, she wrote seven mini-comics books in the Take-Out series. Each was a twelve-page black-and-white comic. A short story in Bizarro World for DC Comics and a short story in Volume 4 of the Flight anthology are among the early works.

Telgemeier joined Girlamatic, a subscription-based webcomics website dedicated to female writers, in 2004. The competitiveness and schedule of a weekly webcomic, Telgemeier's wife, compelled her to write Smile, an autobiographical story.

Her first introduction to published comics came from the creation of graphic novel interpretations of Baby-Sitters Club books. Telgemeier said she met an editor from Scholastic at an art gallery party in 2004 who said that Scholastic was considering establishing a graphic novel imprint. Telgemeier met with the editor's boss, who encouraged her to pitch an idea for Scholastic at the San Diego Comic-Con this year. They asked Telgemeier to work on a graphic novel version after she revealed that she was a fan of Ann M. Martin's The Baby-Sitters Club series. Scholastic, although its imprint Graphix continued to publish four graphic novels in the series: Kristy's Great Idea, The Truth About Stacey, Mary Anne Saves the Day, and Claudia and Mean Janine were among the book series's three graphic novels. Telgemeier's conversions enabled her to leave her full-time work and concentrate on her art, and she published her fourth Baby-Sitters Club book in 2008.

Del Rey Manga co-authored X-Men: Misfits, which Telgemeier co-authored with her then-husband Dave Roman in 2009. On the New York Times bestseller list for Paperback Graphic Books, it took up at least five weeks.

Telgemeier's print graphic novel version of her webcomic Smile was published in February 2010. Smile first appeared on a New York Times bestseller list in 2011, and as of October 2020, it is still on the New York Times Bestseller List for Graphic Books and Manga.

Telgemeier came after Smile with a series of original graphic novels, all of which have made a New York Times Bestseller List: a nifty new graphic novel.

Telgemeier has continued to contribute to anthologies, including Nursery Rhyme Comics (2011, First Second); Fairy Tale Comics (2013, First Second); and Reces Squad: Reces. (2014, Random House)

"I'm more aware than ever of what I want to say to kids through my books," Telgemeier said of her book "I'm sure it's going to be O.K." That everyone, with just a little bit of talking and a little bit of empathy, will find out that they have a lot in common."

Salt & Straw collaborated with Scholastic Inc. in 2021 to produce a line of Comics themed ice creams. "Smile: Words & Pictures," Telgemeier's ice cream flavor, was "A pencil-inspired yellow and pink almond sponge cake and Stracciatella "pencil shavings" are strewn about a notebook paper-esque canvas, in this case trusty vanilla ice cream were the subject, according to Salt & Straw.
