Hank Searls Career

Career

The Crowded Sky, Hank Searls' 1960 book, was turned into a film starring Dana Andrews, Rhonda Fleming, Anne Francis, and Troy Donahue.

The Penetrators, the story of a maverick Royal Air Force exchange officer who orders a mock Avro Vulcan bomber assault on the United States is set in the USAF's Strategic Air Command. The Penetrators were the kind of detailed, political-military drama that later became characteristic of Tom Clancy, bribes full of quotes from Curtis LeMay, Robert S McNamara, and other authors of the Cold War period. The book also argued in favor of the US's fully-manned long-range bomber force, which was then in danger of being phased out in favour of ICBMs.

The Pilgrim Project by Searls was based on Robert Duvall's 1968 Robert Altman film Countdown, which featured Robert Duvall and James Caan.

Searls wrote the screenplay for the 1978 Angie Dickinson television film Overboard, based on his own book of the same name. Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., wrote a biography. Young Joe, The Forgotten Kennedy, The Lost Prince This became the basis of the 1977 television film Young Joe, the Forgotten Kennedy, starring Peter Strauss in the title role.

The Astronaut (1962), Pentagon (1971), Hero Ship (1969), and Altitude Zero (1991) are among Searls' other military and aviation-themed books. Firewind (1981), Sounding (1982), Blood Song (1984), Kataki (1987), and The Adventures of Mike Blair (1988). He also wrote the novelizations of Jaws 2 in 1978 and Jaws: The Revenge in 1987.

The popular Sega Genesis game Ecco the Dolphin (1992) is said to be inspired by Searls' book "Sounding," although the reference is anonymous. While reading the book, Ed Annunziata, the product's designer, and its sequel, reportedly had no idea about the game's concept.
