Gus Risman Life

Augustus "Gus" John Ferdinand Risman (21 March 1911 – 17 October 1994) was a Welsh professional rugby league footballer who competed in the 1920s to the 1950s and taught in the 1940s and 1970s. Risman, a tragic three-quarter who also played fullback and standoff, was born in Cardiff and played rugby union in South Wales as a schoolboy before being offered a trial by Salford. On August 31, 1929, he made his Salford debut and went on to enjoy a lot of success with the club.

He earned 17 caps for Great Britain and finished his career at Workington Town, remarkably leading them to Rugby League Challenge Cup glory as player-coach at the age of 41 in 1952.

After a 25-year career, he retired as a player in 1954.

In 1988, Risman captained the 1946 "Indomitable" tourists of Australia.

Bev Risman's son, Gus Risman, also became a top rugby league footballer.

Risman Place, one of the newly developed streets in Workington's revitalized town center, is named in honor.

Gus Risman Career

Playing career

Gus Risman was also courted by association football clubs during the period before signing for Salford. Tottenham Hotspur has been given Risman terms. However, football did not have the same initial tenacity in those days as it does today. Signing for a rugby league club in the 1920s was more rewarding financially. In football, signing-on fees were limited or capped, but in rugby league, such fees could equal a year of service and playing wages.

Gus Risman was one of the thirteen players to tour France with Salford, including Bert Brown, Jack Feetham, Paddy Dalton, Barney Elliott, Ernest Harris, Barney Hudson, Alf Middleton, Alf Middleton, Harold Osman, Billy Watkins, and Billy Williams.

In 1936 against Australia (2 matches), Gus Risman won caps for Wales against Australia (1931-1945 18-caps), and in 1946 against Australia (3 matches).

Only four rugby league footballers have played for Wales and then England; Emlyn Jenkins, Gus Risman, Jim Sullivan, and Les White are among them; briefly for Wales, then England; and finally for England.

Gus Risman was left center in Salford's 3–15 loss to Wigan in the Championship Final during the 1933-1934-1934 season at Wilderspool Stadium, Warrington, on April 28. 1934.

In Salford's 7-4 victory over Barrow in the 1938 Challenge Cup Final at Wembley Stadium, the captain was on right wing and scored two goals.

Gus Risman's time was on display in the 1931 Lancashire Cup Final at The Cliff, Broughton, Wilford's 21–15 loss over Wigan in the 1935 Lancashire Cup Final, 7–10 landslide final at Wilderspool, Warrington, was the 15–10 win over Wigan over Salford in the 1931 Lancashire Cup Final on Sunday, 1931.

Gus Risman was centre of a Rugby League XIII match against Northern Command XIII at Thrum Hall, Halifax, on March 21, 1942. Despite being converted into a professional, Risman was part of the 1945 British Empire Forces rugby union team that competed in France, during a period when the strict guideline between amateur and professional was loosened. In a game that helped the British win by 27–6. Risman, playing at center, had two tries and three conversions.

Gus Risman holds the third position on Workington Town's "most points in a career" ranking, behind Neil Fox, Jim Sullivan, and Kevin Sinfield.

Gus Risman is one of the fewer than ten Welshmen to have scored more than 2,000 points in their rugby league career, and is one of only two Welshmen to have scored more than 200 points in their rugby league careers.
