Gregory Martin Itzin (born April 20, 1948) is an Emmy Award-nominated American film and television actor.

Early life

Itzin was born in Washington, D.C., son of Evelyn Loretta (née Smith) and Martin Joseph Itzin. His family immigrated to Burlington, Wisconsin, where his father was mayor when he was in sixth grade. Itzin set out to be a stage actor while undergoing training at San Francisco's American Conservatory Theater. He appeared on many stages around the country.

Personal life, health and death

Itzin and his partner, Judie, who married in 1979, had two children.

In 2015, Itzin suffered a "larger heart attack," but was able to keep acting. He died on July 8, 2022, at the age of 74, as a result of injuries during an emergency surgery.

Career

Itzin appeared in guest starring roles on several television shows, as in the MacGyver episode "Final Approach" (1986). He was nominated for his role in The Kentucky Cycle, a Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Itzin appeared in the film Airplane! Howard, an accountant at a casino, appeared on "Wheel of Fortune" as Howard, an accountant at a casino.

Itzin appeared in Vice President Charles Logan's recurring role in 2005. The character had become President by the following season and was enlarged to become one of the story's most popular figures. For this appearance, Itzin received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Since he had previously applied for a role in the second season of the show, he didn't have to audition for the role, and knew one of the producers. In season six, Itzin appeared in four episodes. During the eighth season of the show, Itzin returned for a story arc to help President Allison Taylor maintain the Peace Treaty alive. This resulted in an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series. Itzin, who was described as a "doofus" for not liking cheese before this role, appeared in a commercial for cheese products, which was somewhat coincident.

In a episode of Robot Chicken, Bill Adama, Dick Tracy, and a police officer at Randy's Halloween night appeared as William Adama, Dick Tracy, a former warden.

Itzin has appeared on television shows such as Friends as Theodore Hannigan, father of Mike Hannigan, Murder One, NCIS, and The Mentalist. He was in charge of the unit in the latter for 13 episodes before he renamed it to 24 for its final season. Itzin appeared on Night Court, Matlock, Diagnosis: Murder, Jake and the Fatman, The O.C., Beverly Hills, 90210, Judging Amy, The Pretender, and Firefly, a short-lived science fiction film. In the 2003 television film DC 9/11: Time of War, John Ashcroft portrayed him. He appeared on Covert Affairs on a regular basis.

In the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "Dax," Itzin made his first Star Trek appearance in 1993. He's been a regular star Trek actor, appearing in five different series over the years; his most recent Trek role was Admiral Black in Star Trek: Enterprise. In the sixth-season episode "Who Mourns for Morn," he appeared on DS9 once more. In the episode "Critical Care" of Star Trek: Voyager, he appeared as Doctor Dysek. Voyager's 7th season shows him.

In the season two episode "Test Of My Love" as a billionaire whose son becomes a romantic concern of Miley's, Itzin was a special guest star on the Disney Channel hit show Hannah Montana.

He hosted ACME: This Week!

On February 23, 2008, at the ACME Comedy Theatre, appearing in several sketches as well as a short film, "Law and Order: Particularly Special Victims Unit." Itzin appeared in seasons 1–4 of USA Network's series Covert Affairs, and it was a regular fixture.

On stage, he appeared in numerous theatre venues around the country, as well as being a member of the Matrix Theatre Company in Los Angeles, where he appeared in award-winning productions of Waiting for Godot, The Homecoming, and The Birthday Party (each winning him an L.A. ticket). (Award for their work was given by the Drama Critics Circle). He received Tony Award and Drama Desk Award nominations for his role in the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Kentucky Cycle, which he appeared in the world premiere at the Intiman Theatre, Mark Taper Forum, and Broadway.

In the world premiere of Donald Margulies' Shipwrecked, he appeared on stage as Louis de Rougemont. An Entertainment at the South Coast Repertory, which was then revived at the Geffen Playhouse.

In 2010, he appeared in King Lear's production as the Earl of Kent. He received the L.A. lottery. For this appearance, Drama Critics Circle Award has been given.

He appeared in several radio plays with The Los Angeles Theatre Works and appeared as the Archbishop in Saint Joan's 2010 audio recording.

In Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Itzin played a psychiatrist who looked and sounded like actor McLean Stevenson on M*A*S*H and as a prison warden.
