Greg Brown (born Gregory Dane Brown, July 2, 1949) is an American folk singer from Iowa.
Early life
Brown was born into a musical family and his father was a Pentecostal minister. He grew up in southwestern Iowa's Hacklebarney area, which he describes as "hill country." Brown spent many years as a touring musician before returning to Iowa, where he appeared live and started his songwriting career.
Personal life
Greg Brown has been married three times. Pieta Brown, his first marriage's daughter, and two from his second marriage: Constance Brown and Zoe Brown, all three are musicians. He has one son. Iris DeMent, a brown girl, married singer-songwriter Brown in November 2002. Daria Chesnokva Victorona, a Russian girl who was born in 2005, was adopted by him and his wife, Dasha Brown.
Career
Brown toured and appeared on A Prairie Home Companion in the 1980s and had recurring appearances. Brown has self-published two albums, 44 & 66, and The Iowa Waltz. After presenting a sold-out concert at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1990, Bob Feldman and Susan Ode formed Red House Records. Brown became the country's first recording artist. Brown has released two dozen albums. Songs of Innocence and Experience, based on William Blake's poems, was released in 1986. The National Association of Independent Record Distributors (Indee Award) was given to him (1989) for his contribution to Iowa guitarist Bo Ramsey's long collaboration.
The Poet Game (1994), his tenth studio album, received significant international radio play (charting on AAA and topping The Gavin Report's Americana chart), as well as a NAIRD Indie award for singer-songwriter Album of the Year, but also a NAIRD Indie accolade for musician-songwriter Album of the Year. The Live One (1995) was a fan favorite, capturing his lively, warmth, insights, and spirit of his live shows. Further In 1996, the son of a genius, outstripped them all: critics called it a masterpiece, and Rolling Stone received a four-star rating. Greg's 1997 debut, Slant 6 Mind, received more of the same accolades, earning Greg his second Grammy nomination.
One Night, a live concert recording that was first released on the Coffeehouse Extempore label in October 1983, was re-released in 1999. Solid Heart CD was released in 1999 as part of a charity benefit concert. Over and Under (Trailer Records) and the critically acclaimed Covenant, which received the Association for Independent Music's award for Best Contemporary Folk Album of 2000, were among the 2000 releases that were followed. Going Driftless: An artist's Tribute to Greg Brown included guest vocal performances by Ani DiFranco, Gillian Welch, Shawn Colvin, and his three children.
He released The Evening Call, which Acoustic Guitar magazine described as "among Brown's finest creation" and was included in an episode of NPR's On Point, in 2006. On the EarthWorks Music label, a recording of another benefit concert was released in 2007. Brown was nominated for a Folk Alliance Award in 2007.
