Graham Gano Life

Graham Clark Gano (born April 9, 1987) is a Scottish-born American football placekicker for the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League (NFL).

He played college football at Florida State University and was signed by the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent in 2009.

Gano has also played for the Las Vegas Locomotives and the Washington Redskins.

During his tenure with the Panthers, Gano attained the franchise's record for longest field goal at 63 yards in 2018.

Early years

Gano's father, Mark, was a United States Navy Master Chief Petty Officer and Vietnam veteran who was stationed at Canadian Forces Base, Gander, Newfoundland when Gano was born. Gano has a long line of ancestors who served in the military, including his great grandfather Richard Gano, and grandfather Raymond of Martinsburg, West Virginia. Gano grew up in Cantonment, Florida, near Pensacola, Florida and attended J. M. Tate High School, Home of the Mighty Mighty Aggies, where he was a two-sport star in football and track. In high school football, he was an All-American First-team selection by USA Today and the nation's third-ranked kicker by Rivals.com. Gano played in the CaliFlorida All-Star game, completing a 50-yard field goal in the game. During his senior season, Gano kicked three field goals over 55 yards (57, 64, and 65 yards) and had a 71-yard field goal made which was negated by a penalty. A total of 36 of his 38 kickoffs were touchbacks and he averaged better than 42 yards per punt as a senior.

As a standout track & field athlete, Gano was one of the state's top performers in the sprinting events. He captured three state titles in track at the 2005 FHSAA 3A District 1, winning the 100-meter dash, with a time of 10.55 seconds, the 200-meter dash, with a time of 21.70 seconds, and the 400-meter dash, with a time of 48.00 seconds.

Graham Gano Career

College career

Gano played for Florida State University from 2005 to 2008, playing as a kicker and punter for the Florida State Seminoles.

Gano was voted first in the FBS for field goals made, a percentage of field goals converted, and 50-yard field goals set, and he was named national best kicker during his senior year in 2008. He was one of only two kickers in college to make more than half of his field goal attempts in the 2008 season. He was the highest scoring kicker in America and fourth overall in the FBS in scoring. He was a member of Rivals.com, Scout.com, and CBS Sports first-team All-American. Walter Camp, Associated Press, Sporting News, SI.com, and Phil Steele's second-team All-American were listed on the website. He also received First-Team awards from the All-ACC.

Gano was named ACC Specialist of the Week for his kicking efforts against NC State, Virginia Tech, Clemson, and Maryland. He was also a two-time Lou Groza Star of the Week nominee for his work in Florida State's victories over NC State and Clemson. As selected by the Florida State coaching staff, he was named offensive special teams player of the year for the Seminoles. With a career-best 2.2 field goals per game average, he led the ACC in field goals per game. Gano has the highest field goal percentage in the ACC, with 92.3 percent of his field goal attempts (24 of 26) and led the league in field goal made with 24. He was also the top scorer in the ACC with 105 points and a 9.5 points per game average. Gano is the only kicker in FSU history to fulfill over 90% of his field goals in a season. When he was named the Most Valuable Player in the 2008 Champs Sports Bowl, he was one of only two punters to be named MVP of a bowl game. He holds the Seminoles' single season record for 50+ yard field goals, scoring five straight attempts from 50 yards or longer. Despite only kickin for one season, Gano finished second in career 50-yard field goals at FSU, behind second time Lou Groza Award winner Sebastian Janikowski.

Professional career

Right after the 2009 NFL Draft, Gano signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent. Gano was waived by the Ravens after the Ravens named Steve Hauschka as their kicker on September 5.

After being cut by the Ravens, Gano was signed by the Las Vegas Locomotives of the United Football League. Since scoring a 32-yard field goal and then setting a new Long Field Goal of 53 yards, he earned his first points for the league. He was responsible for the winning field goal, which gave the Locomotives their first-ever UFL championship. He finished the season ranked in scoring and field goals.

Gano was signed by the Washington Redskins on December 8, 2009, replacing veteran Shaun Suisham. He made it to his first NFL field goal attempt, a 46-yard effort against the Oakland Raiders on December 13, 2009. Gano made his Redskins debut in 2010. He affirmed his role as a backup kicker for the Redskins by scoring three overtime game-winning field goals against the Green Bay Packers, Tennessee Titans, and Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Redskins welcomed Shayne Graham to compete due to Gano's inconsistency in the 2010 season. Gano was kept on the final roster despite a good showing in the preseason and a poor showing by Graham in the first preseason game before the new season. He kicked a 59-yard field goal against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 9 of the 2011 season, which tied the Redskins' franchise record of 57 yards. He made 31 of 41 field goal attempts, five of the ten misses being blocked kicks, with five of the ten missed calls being blocked kicks.

The Redskins negotiated exclusive negotiation rights and promising him a minimum salary on March 3, 2012. Since being drafted by the team, he was yet again forced to compete for his position. Since Rackers was cut by the team on August 27, it seemed that Gano retained his spot on the Redskins' roster. Gano was released the next day after the team signed veteran Billy Cundiff in a surprise trade by the Redskins.

Gano was signed by the Carolina Panthers on November 20, 2012, replacing Justin Medlock. He appeared in six games of the season under head coach Ron Rivera and converted nine out of eleven field goal attempts. He converted all 42 extra point attempts and 24 of 27 field goal attempts in the 2013 season.

Gano had signed a new four-year deal with the Panthers worth $12.4 million on February 28, 2014. All 34 extra point attempts and 29 of 35 field goal attempts were converted by him.

Gano kicked a game-winning 52-yard field goal in overtime against the Indianapolis Colts on November 2, 2015. The Panthers got off to a record-breaking 7-0 start on the field.

Gano had a season-best 62 points in November 2015, going 15-for-17 on field goals and 17-for-18 on extra-point attempts. Gano was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Month for his work during November. He was the second kicker in the Panthers' franchise history to win the award (the first was John Kasay in September 1996). Gano ranked second in points scored in the first 12 weeks of the season, second only in NFL in points scored with 110, behind only New England Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski (111). Gano kicked his second walk-off winner this season during the Panthers' 38–35 victory over the New York Giants, when time expired to propel the Panthers to a 14-0 record. Gano finished the 2015 NFL season with 146 points, breaking John Kasay's record for most in a season (145, 1996). He also led the NFL with 69 touchbacks and a 72.0 yard average kickoff distance during the season.

Gano was one of two on field goals and converted the Panthers' lone extra point in Super Bowl 50. Gano missed a field goal in the third quarter, with the Panthers trailing by a score of 13–7. The Panthers fell to the Denver Broncos by a score of 24–10.

Gano scored all of the Panthers' points in Week 9, 2017, over the Buffalo Bills. He converted a 34-yarder, 28-yarder, and a 20-yarder.

Gano missed a 25-yard field goal early in a Wild Card Game against the Saints early in the season, but the Saints would go on to make four field goals, including a 58-yard field goal, tying Pete Stoyanovich for the longest field goal in football history.

Gano was named in 2017 as an injury substitute for Greg Zuerlein.

Gano has signed a four-year, $17 million deal extension with the Panthers on March 6, 2018. Gano kicked a 63-yard field goal game-winning field goal as time expired in a 33-31 victory over the New York Giants on October 8, earning him NFC Special Teams Player of the Week. The kick also tied for the first non-altitude field goal set by Tom Dempsey in 1970 and then tied by David Akers in 2012. After missing the previous two games due to sickness, he was put on injured reserve on December 19, 2018. He finished the season with 30 of 33 extra point attempts and 14 of 16 field goal attempts.

Gano was put on injured reserve on August 30, 2019, bringing an end to his 2019 season. On July 30, 2020, he was released by the team.

Gano joined the New York Giants on August 19, 2020.

In Week 5, Gano smashed three field goals of 50 or more yards at Dallas (50, 54, and 55 yards). Gano's last week, against his former team, the Washington Redskins, was a perfect two for two on extra point shooters and a superb three for three on field goal attempts. For his appearance in Week 9, Gano was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week.

Gano's three-year contract extension was agreed to 2023 on November 15, 2020. After testing positive for COVID-19, Gano was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list on November 17, 2020. He was activated on November 28, 2020.

Gano failed a 35 yard field goal against the New Orleans Saints on October 3, 2021, snaping his streak of most consecutive field goals made of only 37, tied with Jason Myers in fourth place in the NFL. In Week 7's match against the Carolina Panthers, Gano was named one of the NFC special teams players of the week for his three field goals.

Kayvon Thibodeaux, 20,22, contributed $50,000 to a charity to get Gano's #5 jersey from him, who went from #5 to #9. Gano made four field goals in the 19-16 victory over the Carolina Panthers in Week 2 and was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week.

In an humiliating loss to Seattle, dissatisfied Giants coach Brian Daboll throws a pick-six, sparking in rage and indignation. But the $160 million QB benchbacks him on the sidelines

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 3, 2023
Following a 24-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, a night of resentment boiled over on the sidelines of the New York Giants' football team as quarterback Daniel Jones and head coach Brian Daboll appeared tumultuous. Daboll went over to his quarterback to talk to him as Jones was arriving late in the third quarter. Jones appeared to look at him and then walked away without saying a word. Daboll tried to go over to Jones on the bench and go over something with him on a tablet later in the night. Jones appeared to ignore him, and Daboll replied by flashing the tablet at an employee.

Giants clinch first win of the season after overcoming 21-point deficit in their biggest comeback since 1949 against the Cardinals to bounce back from horror 40-0 opening defeat

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 18, 2023
The New York Giants clinched their first victory of the 2023 NFL season after scoring their first points of the season in a comeback victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. The Giants, who were defeated 40-0 by the Dallas Cowboys in their season opener last week, bounced back in a big game against the Cardinals in Arizona. Daniel Jones and co. failed to get any points on the board in Week 1 and their second game seemed to be on the same awful pattern as they failed to score in the first two quarters of Sunday's game. The Giants won 31-28 in one of their biggest comebacks, despite being scoreless in the first six quarters of the 2023 season.

Fans of NFL compare CBS' latest camera angle to being DRUNK

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 17, 2022
With some comparing it to being inebriated, football fans can't decide on CBS Sports' latest camera model. An intriguing new angle was presented during the New York Giants' dramatic last second 24-20 victory over the Baltimore Ravens cameras. On a kickoff in the second quarter, the camera angle provided not only a close-up view of the return but also a whole new camera angle for viewers.
