Grace Bonney Life

Grace Bonney is an author, blogger, and entrepreneur.

Bonney wrote In The Company of Women, a book that collected more than 100 stories about women entrepreneurs who overcame adversity.

In 2004, she co-authored Design*Sponge, a DIY interior design book that emphasizes intersectional and inclusive discussions of design and cultural topics.

Her book Good Company: Where Creativity Meets Business premiered in 2018, she also began releasing the magazine Good Company: Where Creativity Meets Business in 2018.

Personal life

Bonney was born in Virginia Beach and attended the College of William and Mary, later moving to New York. Bonney was teased in middle school and high school for being queer; as a result, Bonney had a difficult time dealing with internalized homophobia until age 30. Bonney first met Aaron Coles in October 2003. They married in 2009 and divorced in 2011. Bonney came out as the queer after the divorce.

Julia Turshen, a chef from Bonney, married her in 2013. Bonney said on the LGBTQ&A podcast, "I mean, it's a very stereotypical lesbian story of email, birthday, and marriage four months later," she said. Bonney identifies himself as a queer. Bonney was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 35.

Bonney has talked out about how women have unrealistic hopes for work and life balance, and that it is important for women to learn about successful role models. Bonney was lauded for his entrepreneurial involvement in the Frederick Douglass 200 project, which honors the lives of 200 people who represent Frederick Douglass' spirit and work.

Bonney came out as a non-binary in 2022, but she no longer uses her/her pronouns.

Grace Bonney Career

Career

Bonney founded Design*Sponge, a design and culture website that is dedicated to intergenerational and inclusive discussions of design and culture. The website was dedicated to supporting a creative community. Adobe named the website "one of the internet's most popular design blogs" for 15 years. The last article on Design*Sponge appeared in August 2019, and the entire blog is now archived in the Library of Congress.

Bonney's blog started as a side project and then as a freelance writer for a number of interior and design-related publications, including House and Garden, Domino, and Craft. Bonney hoped to find a magazine when designing*Sponge gained a large following (and consequently, advertisers), but by 2009, Bonney had enough money to work full time. Bonney has said that Design*Sponge benefited from being a "early era blog" and being one of the first on the internet, becoming most popular during this time period of 2004-2009. "There were only a few of us on the internet and looking for furniture or interior design," Bonney said. Organically, we grew in a way that is practically impossible to do today.

Bonney's personal growth and new aspirations became apparent in the blog's focus as time progressed. It went "from products to people," including "how gender, classism, and bigotry, social problems, and representation all play into and influence design."

Bonney's decision to shut the blog was based on the changing advertising market, the emergence of social media, and the proliferation of design portals. Advertisers were getting cheaper ads, but it wasn't enough to sustain the website due to the changes in the design media landscape, and that was not sufficient to sustain it. Bonney decided to close the blog after it's 15th year rather than attempting to change the content strategy or "chase clicks."

Bonney's Good Company: Where Creativity Meets Business, a print magazine that began in 2018. Bonney's book In the Company of Women inspired the magazine. The magazine was created to promote "motivation, inspiration, practical guidance, and a strong sense of connection and community for women and non-binary creatives at any point in life." The magazine, which was supposed to be bi-annual, had three issues.
