Personal life
Johnson and fellow WNBA player Brittney Griner were announced engaged on August 14, 2014. Both women were arrested for physically attacking each other on April 22, 2015, after police broke up a confrontation between the two women in their Goodyear, Arizona home. During the incident, both men sustained minor injuries. Nevertheless, they remained together and married on May 8, 2015. Johnson was confirmed pregnant on June 4, 2015, but that she would miss the 2015 WNBA season. Griner applied for annulment, but it was refused one day later. In October 2015, Johnson gave birth to twin girls, some 16 weeks early. The twins were born as a result of IVF therapy using her eggs and a sperm donation. In June 2016, the divorce was finalized.
College career
In 2008, Johnson began attending the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. During her college career, she had a total of 36 double-doubles.
During her fourth year of basketball eligibility, Johnson earned a master's degree in international studies and a bachelor's degree in communications.

Professional career
The Tulsa Shock selected Johnson in the first round of the 2012 WNBA Draft (4th overall). She was ranked fourth in steals per game in her rookie season (a career-best 2.1 spg).
Johnson was named in the Western Conference All-Star team in 2013 and 2014, her second and third seasons with the Shock.
Since announcing her pregnancy, Johnson stayed on maternity leave in the 2015 WNBA season.
After her suspension after her domestic violence encounter with Brittney Griner, she returned one month into the 2016 WNBA season. Johnson had re-signed with the Dallas Wings by this time and was renamed to Dallas by this time. With 6 starts, Johnson averaged 11.3 ppg in 18 games. In a victory over the Phoenix Mercury on Sunday, she scored 23 points and had a career-high 22 rebounds, and she recorded the league's 16th 20-rebound performance of the season.
Johnson continued to post double-doubles in rebounds and points throughout the 2017 season, which is what she has been known for since her time. Johnson had a challenging season in 2018 with a couple injuries sidelining her for a few games and causing her to play some games off the bench. She appeared in 29 games with 17 starts and would average career-lows in scoring and rebounding. With a 15-19 record and the eighth seed in the league, the Wings will also qualify for the playoffs. They will miss out on the Phoenix Mercury in the first round once more.
Johnson played three off-seasons in Russia for two different clubs, Chevakata Vologda and Nadezhda Orenburg. As of November 2016, Johnson signed with the Xinjiang Tiashan Deers of the WCBA for the 2016–17 off-season.
