As ITV axes Vera after 14 years, these are the actors whose careers were launched by the crime series (including one unlikely musician!)

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 23, 2024
Earlier this week, ITV confirmed that the 78-year-old will return for one final season, which will be filmed in Northumberland this summer. Since Vera began in 2011, the show has starred several industry heavyweights - including the late Paul Ritter, Notting Hill's Gina McKee and Catastrophe star Mark Bonnar. However, the series also helped to launch the careers of some of the UK's biggest actors, such as Kingsley Ben-Adir (centre left) and Cush Jumbo (centre right). Here FEMAIL takes a look back at the stars (and musician Sam Feder, left) who owe their careers to the crime drama. Right: Vera actor David Leon, who played DS Joe Ashworth.

JAN MOIR: I've been trying to figure out what the point of the Royal Family any more since the Queen's death. Is that correct?

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 22, 2023
JAN MOIR: Since the Queen died, I've been wondering what the point of the Royal Family any more. Is that wrong? And my adoration as this regal, dutiful, much-loved matriarch left us for the grand palace in the sky. The well-meaning but essentially ho-hum next generation, the second tier on the crumbling cake, and the monarchical subs' bench, is all we are left with now. If concerns about their personal and collective roles in the United Kingdom are raised, the question of their significance becomes even more relevant when they venture abroad.

When filming a new thriller The End We Start From, Jodie Comer looks dissatisfied

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 15, 2022
On Monday, Jodie Comer looked dishevelled on set in Oxfordshire countryside as she shot a new dystopian drama titled The End We Start From. The actress, 29, who plays a new mother, was seen clutching a baby that was strapped to her chest during the city of London's devastating floods. As she chatted to crew members, she disguised herself for the role in a massive grey t-shirt and a stripe maxi skirt.

Helen Mirren is a magnificent performer but this is a travesty of history

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 9, 2022
SARAH VINE: I missed Helen Mirren's lavish four-part HBO series Catherine The Greatest when it first premiered on YouTube; now it's available on Freeview, it's worth a look. No doubt that it has a lot to do with the fact that we live in such bleak, uninspiring times that we are so devoted to tales of nobility and adventure. The prequel to Game Of Thrones (by all accounts disastrous) Lord Of The Rings prequel The Rings Of Power, Amazon's (by all accounts ineffective) Lord Of The Rings prequel The Rings Of Power... They provide a colorful escape from modern life's constant challenges. Empress of Russia by Mirren is a much more youthful figure in comparison to the other Catherine gracing the airwaves (Elle Fanning in the lavishly bonkers The Greatest), notably more mature both physically and metaphorically. Mirren is in her seventies and playing a woman who was in her forties when the majority of the incident took place - not surprising for male comedians but not unheard of for a woman. So there's something of a quiet triumph for the feminists on display, with Mirren's stunning execution being every bit as seductive as any fresh-faced, firm-fleshed starlet.
