During a press conference, the mayor of Portland revealed plans to ban any unsanctioned homeless camps in the city, branding the situation a "vortex of misery for all concerned." During a virtual press conference on Friday, Mayor Ted Wheeler declared that the homeless crisis in Portland is "nothing less than a humanitarian tragedy." To deal with the crisis, he wants to produce 20,000 affordable housing units in the next ten years. There are currently more than 700 homeless encampments scattered around the region's less than 150 square miles, and the ordeal has also contributed to increased crime in the area. And some of the city's most charming, fashionable, and costly areas have been overrun with tent cities packed with people and littered with garbage, with locals and visitors alike frightened by the subject. Mayor Wheeler condemned the ban, saying that the severity and extent of the homeless crisis in our city is nothing less than a humanitarian tragedy.'
