Paul Grice Life

Herbert Paul Grice (13 March 1913 to August 1988), often known as H. P. Grice, H. Paul Grice, or Paul Grice, was a British philosopher of language whose work on meaning inspired the philosophical study of semantics.

He is well-known for his theory of guilt.

Life

Born and raised in Harborne (now a suburb of Birmingham), in the United Kingdom, he was educated at Clifton College and then at Oxford's Corpus Christi College. He returned to Oxford after a brief period as a student at Merton College from 1936 to 1938, first as a scholar student and then as a Professor, Fellow, and Tutor from 1938 at St John's College. Grice served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War; after the war, he returned to St John's Fellowship, which he held until 1967. In that year, he moved to the United States to take up a professorship at the University of California, Berkeley, where he taught until 1988. In 1979, he returned to the United Kingdom to give Aspects of Reason lectures. In his vain book, 'Turne Words (1989), he reprinted many of his essays and papers.

Grice married Kathleen Watson in 1942, and the couple had two children.
