Early life and education
Murphy, a native of Florence, South Carolina, was a member of Columbia City Ballet before attending high school at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. She performed principal roles in several of the school's productions, including The Nutcracker and George Balanchine's Concerto Barocco, Western Symphony, Tarantella, and Variations, under Melissa Hayden's tutelage.
Personal life
Murphy married Ethan Stiefel, a former principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre and New York City Ballet, on September 19, 2015. Following her appearance in American Ballet Theatre's 2011 season's opening night gala, Stiefel was proposed to her. Murphy revealed on December 14, 2018 that she was pregnant with their first child and would go on maternity leave for the 2018-2019 season. Ax Nathaniel Stiefel was Murphy's first child born in June 2019.
Murphy graduated from St. Mary's College in 2018. At Harvard Business School, she completed the Crossover to Business program for creative artists and athletes.
Career
Murphy joined American Ballet Theatre's corps de ballet in August 1996 at the age of 17. In 1998, she was promoted to soloist. The New York Times paid her rave reviews in 2001, her debut as Odette/Odile in Swan Lake. She was promoted to principal dancer in the following year. Gus Solomon Jr. named her one of Dance Magazine's 25 To Watch by year's grace, this year.
Murphy has appeared with Mariinsky Ballet, Royal Swedish Ballet, Staatsballett Berlin, Kiev Ballet, and The Australian Ballet as a guest artist. During her husband's time as the company's director, she spent 3 years as a Guest Principal with Royal New Zealand Ballet.
