Career
Flynn worked for a brief period at Northwestern University before being hired as a feature writer in 1998 at Entertainment Weekly. She was promoted to television critic and wrote about films, but she was fired in December 2008.
She attributes her success to her 15-plus years in journalism. "I could not have written a book if I hadn't been a journalist first," she said, because it taught me that there is no muse that will come down and bestowe upon you the ability to write. You just have to do it. "I'm definitely not valuable."
Some commentators have accused Flynn of misogyny owing to the often unflattering portrayal of female characters in her books. Flynn identifies as a feminist. Women, she believes, are bad characters in literature because feminism promotes them. "The only thing that really frustrates me is the belief that women are naturally strong, innately nurturing." People will dismiss "trampy, vain, bitchy girls," Flynn said, although there is already a lot of resistance against the belief that women are only physically sick, deceitful, and selfish." Flynn explained in 2015 that she wrote cruel female characters, "I've grown so weary of the spunky heroines, brave rape victims, and soul-searching fashionistas that sell so many books." I'm particularly sad because there are no female protagonists out there – hysterical female villains in particular.
Flynn will be running a book imprint for the newly established independent publisher Zando in 2021.
When Flynn was working for Entertainment Weekly, she was also writing novels during her spare time. She has written three books and one short story.
As an infant, Flynn was a voracious reader of comic and graphic novels. Masks was created by illustrator Dave Gibbons and published a comic book story by her collaboration. It is part of the anthology collection Dark Horse Presents and was first published by Dark Horse Comics in February 2015.
Flynn, co-executive producer and co-writer on the HBO adaptation of her book Sharp Objects starring Amy Adams, appeared alongside Marti Noxon. The miniseries debuted in 2018 and received critical attention.
Flynn was confirmed in February 2014 that he would write the scripts for Utopia, an HBO drama collection based on the famous British series Utopia. David Fincher would have directed and executive produced the HBO series. Due to budget issues between Fincher and HBO, the project was cancelled in July 2015. However, the scheme at Amazon got a second life, with the streamer directing the project to a 2020 launch. Flynn produced all eight episodes and served as the project's showrunner. On September 25, 2020, Utopia was announced on Amazon Prime Video. After one season, the series was cancelled in November 2020.
Flynn was nominated for the Golden Globe, Writers Guild of America Award, and the BAFTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for her Gone Girl screenplay. Steve McQueen and Flynn co-wrote a film adaptation of Widows, the ITV series Widows. Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Colin Farrell, Liam Neeson, Daniel Kaluuya, Robert Duvall, and others were among the film's stars and critics in November 2018.
