Vendela Vida Life

Vendela Vida (born September 6, 1971) is an American novelist, writer, editor, and educator.

She is the author of several books, a writing tutor, and an editor of The Believer magazine.

Vida, a writer-in-Residence and lecturer in San Jose State University's Department of English and Comparative Literature, taught there in 2017.

She is married to author Dave Eggers, has two children, and lives in the Bay Area.

Early life

Vida was born in San Francisco, California, on September 6, 1971. Both of her parents were European immigrants, her mother was from Sweden, and her father is from Hungary. Vendela was her maternal grandmother's name.

She left California to earn her bachelor's degree in English in 1993 at Middlebury College in Vermont, and it was through a mutual friend from her undergraduate years that she met her future spouse, Dave Eggers. She continued her studies and graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree from Columbia University. She interned at the Paris Review, and her master's degree thesis was turned into her first book, Girls on the Verge, after graduating.

Personal life

She is married to author Dave Eggers, has two children, and lives in the San Francisco Bay area. Vida and Eggers met in 1998 in San Francisco at a wedding and began dating in 1999.

Career

Vida co-founded The Believer magazine with Dave Eggers in 2003 and works as an editor with her colleagues from grad school Heidi Julavits and Ed Park. The Believer happens to be located next door to McSweeney's.

She is a co-founder and board member of 826 Valencia, a non-profit group that gives creative writing to children and teens.

Vida worked with Dave Eggers on the screenplay for the 2009 film Away We Go, directed by Sam Mendes and co-starring John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph.

Vida was a Lurie Author-in-Residence and Instructor in San Jose State University's Department of English and Comparative Literature in 2017.
