Mixed martial arts career
After choosing to begin MMA training, Villante made his MMA debut immediately. Due to a nasty haircut, he defeated MMA veteran Randy Durant by a quick TKO. Villante then made it to his next four opponents, with just one of them making it to the first round. He was quickly ranked as the best Heavyweight contender in Ring of Combat. Villante was a legitimate MMA candidate after beating Strikeforce veteran Mike Cook for the vacant Ring of Combat Heavyweight title.
Villante made his Light Heavyweight debut at Ring of Combat XIX with aspirations to become the best in two weight classes. However, Villante lost by TKO after breaking his elbow and stepping back to heavyweight. Villante defeated Joseph Reyes KO after a lengthy recovery from his wrist injury.
Villante had signed a multi-fight contract with Strikeforce on January 11, 2011. On short notice, Villante was immediately thrust into a Heavyweight Grand Prix Reserve contest. On the preliminary card of Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine on January 7, 2012, Villante's next fight was against Trevor Smith. Gian sped out Smith, catching a leg strike in four seconds. Both stood up after landing several clean punches and knees on the ground. Villante was knocked down for about thirty seconds after being struck by a Smith kick once more. Villante stuck to the leg and began landing several unanswered right hands, causing referee Kim Winslow to call the match off at 1:05 of the first round.
Gian won by a unanimous decision over Derrick Mehmen, snaping the start of his winning streak. This was part of the Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Cormier undercard, as seen on Showtime Extreme. Gian was praised by announcer Frank Shamrock for his increased stamina and endurance during the war. From the multiple leg kicks landing by Villante, Mehmen had noticeable bruising on his thighs.
On the Strikeforce, Gian was supposed to face undefeated Guto Inocente: Melendez vs. Healy main card. Due to headliner Gilbert Melendez's injury, the entire card was cancelled. Gian was describing how he was so worried about the cancellation, but the article explored how Gian was able to eat after his horrific ordeal to gain weight.

Villante met fellow promotional newcomer Ovince St. Preux on April 27, 2013 at UFC 159 on his first appearance in UFC. After Villante said he could not see, the confrontation came to an end in an odd fashion: St. Preux mistakenly poked Villante in the right eye with his thumb and referee Kevin Mulhall called an end to the brawl. As a result of the injury, the fight was decided by the judges' scorecards, with St. Preux winning a majority scientific decision (30–28, 30–29, and 29–29).
