Nathan Donald "Nate" Diaz (born April 16, 1985) is an American mixed martial artist currently signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

Diaz is the younger brother of former Strikeforce Welterweight Champion and WEC Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz.

Diaz competed in World Extreme Cagefighting, Strikeforce, and Pancrase prior to joining the United FC.

Since winning The Ultimate Fighter 5 in the UFC, he has been in the fight.

Diaz is tied for the second most UFC bonus awards, behind Joe Lauzon for his second consecutive appearances, with 15 in total.

Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor set the highest UFC pay-per-view buy rate for their UFC 202 contest before it was shattered by UFC 229's buyrate.

He currently ranks #9 in the UFC welterweight rankings as of November 4, 2019.

Personal life

Nick Diaz' brother is also a professional MMA fighter who fights under UFC. Both Diaz brothers are advocates for marijuana and have even produced a California Finest-licensed marijuana pre-roll. They currently operate a Brazilian jitsu school in Stockton, California (Nick Diaz Academy), as well as a Game Up Nutrition, a CBD firm. Since being 18 years old, he has been mainly vegetarian, but he admits to eating fish from time to time. Diaz's mother gave birth to their daughter on June 20, 2018.

Mixed martial arts career

Diaz participated in a bare knuckle MMA brawl against Robert Limon on July 20, 2002, at the age of 17. Footage of the fight has since surfaced, and it is said to be his first competitive experience.

Diaz competed predominantly for World Extreme Cagefighting on his first professional MMA debut (WEC). He competed for the WEC Lightweight Championship against then-champion Hermes França in the second round, losing by submission in the second round. This was the last WEC event held before it was purchased by Zuffa, LLC, then the UFC's parent company.

Diaz was a contestant on The Ultimate Fighter 5, which exclusively featured lightweights, who competed for Jens Pulver's team. Diaz won by submission in the preliminary round, beating fellow Team Pulver colleague Corey Hill by triangle choke submission in the quarterfinals. Diaz won by submission over Team Penn's Gray Maynard, advancing to the finals, where he met teammate Manvel Gamburyan. Diaz won by submission after Gamburyan was forced to withdraw in the second round due to the dislocation of his right shoulder as a result of attempting a takedown attempt. Diaz gained The Ultimate Fighter 5 with the victory.

Diaz demanded tougher opponents after defeating Alvin Robinson and Junior Assunço by submission. Kurt Pellegrino was given a match at UFC Fight Night 13. In the second round, Diaz defeated Pellegrino by triangle-choke submission. Diaz had time to stretch for the crowd and raise two middle fingers before Pellegrino ordered. In the main event of UFC Fight Night 15, Diaz defeated veteran Josh Neer by a split decision.

At UFC 94: Diaz next fought former Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Clay Guida, defeating by a split decision. Guida took Diaz down several times during his wrestling. Guida secured via split decision, defeating Diaz' first appearance in the UFC and his first in the sport's career, as well as his first pay per view debut.

At The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale, Diaz met fellow Ultimate Fighter champion and former Cage Welterweight Champion Joe Stevenson. Diaz was defeated at will through the three rounds by Stevenson, who lost by unanimous verdict.

Diaz was billed to headline UFC Fight Night 19 opposite Melvin Guillard after two consecutive losses by decision. Diaz won by submission to a guillotine choke at 2:30 of round 2.

Diaz made his Welterweight debut on March 27, 2010, defeating Miletich Fighting Systems product and striking specialist Rory Markham. Markham weighed in at 177, whereas Diaz weighed in at 171; the fight was shortened to a catchweight brawl. Diaz won the first round by TKO.

Diaz announced that he would compete in both weight classes after defeating Markham. Marcus Davis, a former professional boxer, was defeated again at Welterweight in August 28, 2010 at UFC 118. Diaz ended Davis after choking him unconscious with a guillotine choke response in the final round; the match also earned Fight of the Night honors.

On January 1, 2011, Diaz will face South Korean fighter Dong Hyun Kim at UFC 125. Diaz lost the fight by a unanimous vote.

On April 30, 2011, Diaz defeated Rory MacDonald at UFC 129. Diaz was unable to mount much counter protest and lost by a unanimous decision. Diaz confirmed that after the loss, he would return to the lightweight division.

In the first round of UFC 135 via armbar submission, Diaz defeated former PRIDE Lightweight Champion Takanori Gomi. For his appearance, he was given the Award of the Night.

Diaz defeated Donald Cerrone at UFC 141 by unanimous decision (30–27, 30–27, and 29–28) in a show that earned both participants Fight of the Night awards. Diaz had one of his best performances of his career despite being knocked off his feet multiple times by sweeping leg kicks from Cerrone. Diaz set a new CompuStrike record by hitting 82% of the strikes he threw en route to his victory over Cerrone.

Diaz earned his Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt from Cesar Gracie after many years of training. He was granted his black belt a month before his fight with fellow Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Jim Miller.

On Fox 3, Diaz next met Jim Miller on May 5, 2012. Diaz defeated Miller in the first two rounds of the first two rounds, with Miller even being dismissed with a straight left at the end of the first round. Miller fired in for a takedown in round two, to which Diaz stuffed and countered with a rolling guillotine choke, resulting in the tap at 4:09 of the second round. Diaz's entry received the third Award of the Night in Diaz' fourth submission. It was also the first time Miller had been barred from participating in MMA.

In the main event for the UFC Lightweight Championship, Diaz met Benson Henderson on December 8, 2012 at UFC on Fox 5 in the main event. Diaz lost the one-sided match by a unanimous vote. Diaz has signed an eight-fight deal with UFC three weeks before the championship match.

On April 20, 2013, Diaz confronted former Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Josh Thomson at UFC on Fox 7. He lost the match via TKO due to a head kick and punches, during which Nate's brother, Nick Diaz, threw a towel into the octagon in an attempt to tell the referee to bring the referee to an end. Diaz was banned by the United FC on May 16, 2013 for breaching the UFC's code of conduct by posting a homophobic word on his Twitter page. The UFC expressed dissatisfaction and suspended him; he was banned for 90 days and fined $20,000.

In the main event at The Ultimate Fighter 18 Finale, Gray Maynard faced Grey Maynard on November 30, 2013. In the first round, Diaz won by TKO. He received his first Knockout of the Night Bonus after the stoppage.

Nate Diaz and fellow UFC fighter T. J. were due to meet on May 5, 2014. Since being deemed inactive by the UFC, Grant was dropped from the UFC's lightweight rankings.

Diaz returned from his self-imposed hiatus and met Rafael Dos Anjos on December 13, 2014 at UFC on Fox 13. Diaz lost weight after weighing in at 160.6 pounds. He was given additional time to make the lightweight limit and was reduced to 155.2. However, he was also fined 20% of his money, which went to Rafael dos Anjos. Diaz, who appeared to be disengaged and angry for the bulk of the conflict, was disqualified by a single vote (30–26, 30–26, and 30–27).

Diaz appeared in a welterweight match against Matt Brown on July 11, 2015 at UFC 189. Brown, on the other hand, revealed in mid-April that the relationship had been scrapped.

Diaz returned to face Michael Johnson on December 19, 2015 at UFC on Fox 17. He had been sitting out for more than a year. He won the fight by a unanimous decision and continued to produce one of the most famous post-fight interviews in UFC history, where he cut out Conor McGregor by saying, "you're taking everything I work for, motherfucker, and I'm a fight your fucking ass" on live broadcast television. Both participants were given Fight of the Night awards.

Diaz was named as a replacement for Conor McGregor at UFC 196 on March 5, 2016, filling in for a wounded Rafael dos Anjos. The contest took place at welterweight (170 lbs) due to a lack of time to shed weight, with Diaz only having eleven days notice. In the second round, Diaz defeated the contest by submission. Diaz won his ninth submission in the UFC, finishing second behind only Royce Gracie in second place. Both fighters were given Fight of the Night awards, and Diaz was also given the Achievement of the Night bonus.

At UFC 200 on July 9, 2016, a rematch with McGregor was scheduled. McGregor was booted from the competition on April 19, but the UFC revealed on April 19 that he had been suspended from the event after failing to meet media obligations in Las Vegas related to the fight. In turn, McGregor's match was postponed and took place at UFC 202, which was contested again at welterweight. Diaz lost the match by a majority vote. This year, the competition was once more named Best of the Night.

Diaz broke the USADA statute by inhaling CBD, Cannabidiol, vaping pen within four hours after a fight at the UFC 202 post-fight press conference. He was not banned because CBD is not considered a PED. Not long after, the USADA modified their laws and retrieved CBD from the banned list.

Diaz was expected to return against Dustin Poirier in a lightweight fight on November 3, 2018, following a two-year absence. This bout was supposed to be the co-headliner of UFC 230. However, Poirier's return to action on October 9, 2018 was announced, but the match was postponed due to injury.

Nate Diaz returned to action on August 17 at UFC 241. In a welterweight brawl, he met Anthony Pettis as the co-main event. He was awarded by unanimous vote after a strong showing.

In the main event of UFC 244, Diaz met Jorge Masvidal on November 2, 2019. UFC President Dana White revealed that the headlining bout was for a "poor motherfucker" (BMF) belt buckle, which was a unique situation. Diaz lost the battle via TKO between rounds three and four after being dominant for the majority of the contest, when the cage-side physician determined that a cut in Diaz's right eye prevented him from continuing.

Diaz was supposed to meet Leon Edwards in the event's co-headliner on May 15, 2021, the first time a non-main event and non-title match had been scheduled for 5 rounds. However, the match was postponed due to a minor injury sustained by Diaz, and it eventually took place for five rounds as well. Edwards ruled the vast majority of the match but was stunned with punches late in the fifth. Edwards was favored by a unanimous vote (49–46, 49–46, 48–46).

Diaz was supposed to face Khamzaev in the main event of UFC 279. Chimaev, however, weighed in at 178.5 pounds, seven-and-a-half pounds over the welterweight non-title fighting maximum at the weigh-ins on September 9, weighing in at 178.5 pounds, seven-and-a-half pounds over the welterweight non-title fight maximum. He was kicked from his Diaz bout due to Chimaev's inability. In the main event, Diaz instead met Tony Ferguson. In the fourth round, Diaz defeated the fight via a guillotine choke submission. Diaz' second appearance of the Night bonus award was given in honor of his victory. Diaz refused to re-sign with the UFC until the match with Ferguson, making Diaz a free agent until the fight ended.

The United Athletes have been told by the UFC to wear the 'Project Rock' boots during promotional activities on fight week. However, Bloody Elbow claims that "several fighters and managers" have informed them that no additional compensation has been paid for wearing the shoes. In January this year, the UFC and Project Rock announced a multi-year contract for Under Armour and Project Rock.
