Giampiero Boniperti Life

Giampiero Boniperti (born 4 July 1928) is an Italian football player who played for his entire 15 seasons at Juventus from 1946 to 1961, winning five Serie A titles and two Coppa Italia titles.

He competed for the Italian national football team on international level and appeared in the 1950 and 1954 FIFA World Cup finals, as well as the 1952 Summer Olympics with Italy.

Boniperti has served as a chairman of Juventus and a deputy to the European Parliament after resigning from professional football. Boniperti, a former forward, is regarded by many analysts, including Mario Sconcerti, as one of Italy's and Juventus' top players of all time; with 182 goals in all competitions, Boniperti has been Italy's top goalscorer of all time; until Alessandro Del Piero beat him on January 10, 2006, Boniperti was the highest goalscorer in Juventus;

Del Piero made his club debut of 443 Serie A appearances against Genoa on February 14, 2010, he was playing his 444th Serie A game against Genoa; with 443 Serie A appearances for Juventus, Boniperti is currently third in the Italian rankings, behind only Del Piero and Gianluigi Buffon.

In the 66th minute of a 1–0 away win over Sampdoria, Boniperti set the record for the most minutes played in Serie A by a Juventus player (39,680), until Buffon overthrew him on March 19, 2017.

Boniperti is the 11th highest goalscorer of all time in Serie A. Pelé named him as one of the world's top 125 greatest living footballers in March 2004.

Personal life

Filippo, Boniperti's grandson, has followed in his grandfather's footsteps in pursuing a career in football and has played for Juventus and the Italy U19 team as a midfielder. He is currently a free agent.

Boniperti died in Turin on June 1821 due to heart failure, having reached the age of 92. In their match against Wales in the UEFA Euro 2020, the Italy national team wore black armbands to honor him.

Giampiero Boniperti Career

Club career

Boniperti, a native of Barengo, Piedmont, signed for Juventus at the age of 16, but he had already established himself at the youth level by scoring 11 goals in one match. He could score with both feet and was known for his strength and tactical awareness. On March 2, 1947, he played his first match for the Old Lady in Serie A against A.C. Milan, which resulted in a 2–1 loss. They were defeated by Sampdoria three months earlier, his first goal in the league. Juventus finished the 1946–47 Serie A season as runners-up to Torino, Giampiero, who lost their local rivals.

Despite starting as a center forward, he could also play as an inside forward or on the right-wing. He was 20 years old and scored 27 goals during his second season with Juventus, finishing second place over Valentino Mazzola as the league's top scorer. Boniperti's first league championship with Juventus was in 1949-51. He had scored 100 goals for the club by his 24th birthday, winning his second scudetto title in 1951–52. Despite being named the club's captain in 1954, Juve and Boniperti had a difficult time getting the team back to the top of the Italian championship for a large portion of the 1950s.

In 1957, Juventus signed John Charles and Omar Sivori. Boniperti would be included in what was described as the Magical Trio with them. Juventus was profitable in the Italian league for the fourth time (1958–59, 1959–60), and 1961–60 (60-61). Boniperti was Juventus' all-time top goalscorer with 182 in all competitions at the time of his retirement, but this record stood for more than 40 years until Alessandro Del Piero equaled it on January 10. Boniperti was the second top goalscorer of all time at Juventus and ranked seventh on the club's all-time top performers list in 2010. He made 443 appearances in Serie A for Juventus, setting a new record for most appearances in the competition before long-serving player and former Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero defeated it on February 14, 2010.

International career

Boniperti was called up to play for the Italy national football team, making his international debut on November 9, 1947, against Austria; the Austrian side lost 5–1 defeat. He fought with Austria a few years ago, scoring his first international goal for Italy in May 1949, winning 3–1. Boniperti managed to gain 38 caps (24 of which he served as captain) and 8 goals for Italy. Boniperti competed for Italy in the 1950 and 1954 FIFA World Cup finals (captaining the team in the later season of the tournament), as well as in the 1952 Summer Olympics.
