Israel banned Fröbe's films after World War II, until Mario Blumenau, a Jewish survivor, announced just eight weeks later that his life and mother's were possibly saved when Fröbe kept them safe from the Nazis.

He was portrayed as the villain in the Swiss-West German film Es geschah am hellichten Tag (It Happened in Broad Daylight, 1958), with Friedrich Dürrenmatt's original screenplay describing him. The James Bond film Goldfinger (1964) creators were captivated by his role as a serial murderer of children, and he was chosen to portray one of the series's most popular villains, Auric Goldfinger. "The odd thing is that since I played Goldfinger in the James Bond film, there are some people who insist on seeing me as a cruel, ruthless villain – a man without laughs."
