Deshpande completed her high school education at Ahilyadevi School in Pune. She then went to Fermson College to receive an M.A. in English Literature. She earned her PhD in English from Pune University in 2007.
Deshpande worked at Fermson College as a professor in the department of English at the University of Pune later in life.
Deshpande died in Pune on March 1, 2003 as a result of alcohol use. She is survived by two daughters from her first marriage, one daughter from her second husband, three grandsons, and a granddaughter.
