Freddy Lim Career

Early life and music career

Since being raised in middle school and high school with Chinese-centric textbooks, Lim became an ardent promoter of Chinese unification as a student. He was ineligible for military service due to a bout of anxiety in middle school. During his second year of university, Lim developed Chthonic, and he began to identify more closely with his Taiwanese identity.

Freddy Krueger, who is often recognized as Freddy in Taiwan, drew Freddy. Lim sang "Left Face of Maradou" on stage and wore corpse paint portraying the Ba-Jiang from 1977 to 2011 when the band stopped using corpse paint.

Lim, a fellow Chthonic member and wife, founded the Taiwan Rock Alliance and as co-founder of The Wall, he helped with two music festivals, Formoz and Megaport. Lim's interest in The Wall was bought out in 2012, and the resulting festival was cancelled in 2014. They returned in the next year, arranged by the Taiwan Rock Alliance in Lim's Lim's Taiwan. Since 2000, the Taiwan Rock Alliance has held a separate concert. The concert, originally called Say No to China, takes place some time after the February 28 tragedy. It was then named Say Yes to Taiwan until 2007, when it was renamed to Spirit of Taiwan.

Lim was elected to lead Amnesty International Taiwan in 2010 and then resigned in 2014.

On the second day of the 2018 On the Pulse of Music Festival, Chthonic was scheduled to attend, but the performance had to be cancelled due to the Hong Kong Immigration Department's refusal to give Lim a visa. Despite the Immigration Department's claim that it does not comment on particular situations, the rejection letter from the group's local sponsor, Goomusic, was released. Officials said in the letter that a person seeking to work in Hong Kong "should, among other things, have a unique skill, knowledge, or experience of value to and not widely available in the HKSAR" and that the immigration Department was not positive that Lim met the requirements. Stephen Vines questioned the operation of an unaccountable bureaucracy, saying it was "no wonder this sort of nonsense was not meant to be made public," despite concerns being raised about whether the bureaucrats' newfound musical knowledge would extend to all the vast number of other performers performing in Hong Kong."

"Whether they're metalheads or not," he started an English podcast with Taiwanese journalist Emily Y. Wu.
