Rashida Tlaib Life

Rashida Harbi Tlaib (born July 24, 1976) is an American politician and advocate who currently serves as the U.S. Representative for Michigan's 13th congressional district since 2019.

The district includes the western half of Detroit, several of its western suburbs, and a large portion of the Downriver neighborhood.

Tlaib, a member of the Democratic Party, served in the Michigan House of Representatives 6th and 12th districts before her election to Congress in 2018.

She ran unopposed in the general election and became the first Muslim woman to serve in Congress, as well as Ilhan Omar (D-MN), one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress. (DSA).

She and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are the third and fourth DSA representatives to serve in Congress and the first female DSA members to vote in Congress.

Tlaib has been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump's administration and has lobbied for President Donald Trump's impeachment.

She has harshly chastised Israel, called for an end to US assistance to Israel, and has voiced support for the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions campaign.

Tlaib is a member of "The Squad" along with Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

Early life and education

Rashida Harbi, the eldest of 14 children in Detroit, was born on July 24, 1976, to working-class Palestinian refugees. Her mother was born in Beit Ur El Foka, near the West Bank city of Ramallah. The word Rashida means "righteous." Her father was born in Beit Hanina, a East Jerusalem suburb. He went first to Nicaragua and then to Detroit. He worked in a Ford Motor Company plant on an assembly line. Tlaib, the eldest of her siblings, was instrumental in raising her children when her parents worked.

Tlaib attended elementary school in Harms, Bennett Elementary, and Phoenix Academy. She graduated from Southwestern High School in Detroit, 1994. Tlaib earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Wayne State University in 1998 and a Juris Doctor degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2004. In 2007, Tlaib was admitted to the bar for the first time.

Personal life

Tlaib married Fayez Tlaib in 1998, when she was 22 years old. Adam and Yousif are two of their sons. The couple have since divorced. In 2018, a campaign spokeswoman referred to Tlaib as a single mother.

Tlaib walked into her family's mosque to express her gratitude for the opportunity to run for Congress in September 2018, according to Tlaib, who articulated the belief that "my Allah is She." The Detroit Free Press reported that, though she acknowledges that some in her faith community suspect her not "Muslim enough," she insists that Allah knows her actions are "reflective of Islam."

13 Democrats and 1 Republican vote AGAINST resolution condemning Iran's 'brazen' assault on Israel with over 350 missiles and drones fired as pro-Gaza 'Squad' member Cori Bush slams Israel for taking out Iranian target in Syria

Thirteen Democrats and one Republican voted against a resolution to condemn Iran for its missile strikes on Israel last weekend.  Israel struck Iran's consulate in Damascus on April 1, taking out Iran's top commander, Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, and other high-level military officials as the war to eradicate Iran-backed terror group Hamas continues. Iran responded with over 350 missiles and drones, which Israel largely intercepted with U.S. help, in its first-ever direct attack on Israel.

Progressives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib accused of 'embracing' Iran over Israel after voting AGAINST holding the 'murderous regime' accountable for launching over 300 drones and missiles at Israel

Democrat progressives are accused of siding with Iran after voting 'no' on measures condemning the 'murderous' regime's attacks on Israel. Speaker Mike Johnson put 17 new bills on the House floor schedule after Iran launched over 300 drone and missile attacks on Israel over the weekend.  They would require the U.S. to 'fully implement' sanctions on Iran and make sure there aren't any loopholes, restrict Iranian imports and crack down on financial transactions between the U.S. and Iran and sanction Chinese companies that buy oil from Iran.

House Republicans vote to enforce stricter Iranian sanctions and stop China from purchasing their oil as they strongly condemn missile attacks on Israel

Speaker Mike Johnson has put 17 new bills involving Iran and Israel on the House floor schedule after Iran launched drone attacks on Israel over the weekend. He's pushed off plans for 'appliance week,' where the House was expected to vote on a series of messaging measures against the Biden administration's regulations on home appliances like gas stoves. The bills would require the U.S. to 'fully implement' sanctions on Iran and make sure there aren't any loopholes, restrict Iranian imports and crack down on financial transactions between the U.S. and Iran and sanction Chinese companies that buy oil from Iran.
